What is this banana?
Ok here is the deal, I am in Atlanta-GA-USA zone 7a. I have Musa basjoo in my backyard but I also have a mysterious banana that was given to me which is much taller than Musa basjoo. The guy that gave it to me has one that must be 15 feet tall.
It does winter fine with some mulch in my zone 7a. Can anyone tell me what it might be as I want to order more. I have tried to transplant one pup with no luck. Thanks Pat ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for the overwhelming response!

Re: What is this banana?
It looks like a basjoo to me. I'm almost 99 percent sure.

Re: What is this banana?
I'm not sure... I'll have to look up... just to be sure. Looks great though.

Re: What is this banana?
I was suspecting a basjoo too but mine in the backyard do not get as big as this one. There must be different varieties and some must grow taller.
Keep them coming Thanks Pat |

You say the nanas overwinter fine -do you mean they freeze and comeback in spring? :waving: |
Re: What is this banana?
Hi
The mats in the front and backyard are not from the same plant. Both corms overwinter fine with mulch, if they would freeze they wouldn't come back. Still looking for an I.D. Thxs Pat |
Re: What is this banana?
Musa basjoo.
Size of the plants may vary depending on the conditions. |
Re: What is this banana?
I've just done my 1st (fingers crossed) pup removal so I understand failure and your hesitance to try again. IME there's a trick involved. Is it possible that your benefactor who gave you one of his could help you separate pups from your tall plant?

The guy that gave it to me is a total stranger that I happened to cross at work and he told me he was clueless about bananas and that someone offered him a pup and he planted it.. Pat |
