I had to post this update... My Praying Hands has been growing like it's on steroids... Rocketship
Look at the size of this huge leaf that just opened this morning
I call it... MEGA LEAF

Look at how much height it's been gaining too!

An update! I have been too lazy to upload pictures, because instead of uploading pictures I prefer to go outside and care for the fruit trees and look at their growth.

It has been growing slowly, but it is growing, and it even made a pup.

But here the update is:

Very Nice BBJ!! Yours is looking great!! :nanadrink:

As you saw from my other post & for those that don't know, I was hit by the Texas Winter storm. I covered all my bananas the best I could. My Praying Hands was one of the ones I took EXTRA precaution with and covered it with several bags, a blanket, and topped it off with a huge plastic pot.

Weather has warmed up and it looks like it will be just fine!
I had left the dead material on to help insulate it further in case of any other freak cold fronts. Now that it has warmed up and it's growing I'm going to trim it so excuse the mess for now lol

Here is an update

My Praying Hands has recovered very nicely and it's starting to pick up speed!
Even my Orinocos in the back need to catch up! :ha:

Here is an update on mine... recovered from winter and is starting to pull away.

About five foot pstem, tip of leaf is around ten feet? I dunno, haven’t measured it..

BBJ,

I think that pup is a major drag on the main plants growth. In order to win the contest you probably need to jettison that fine looking anchor...(hint, hint).

Don't help him... Help ME! :ha::ha:

Here's mine right now, p-stem is around 3' and the top of the leaf is just under 6ft (Fence is 6ft')

My Orinoco already caught up even with a bunch of pups, but the P Hands has more girth on the stem. (Orinoco on the right)

Other than that my P Hands is looking VERY healthy so I'm happy :08:

Haha. Your plants look great.

There have been a number of storms with strong wind in my area so most of my plants have shredded leaves. Sad.

My P Hands is only just catching up with its first pup!
The tiny thing barely caught my eye :ha::ha:

Well since you posted an update today, I might as well do the same :nanadrink:
Here it is with the newest leaf, it might not be as big as the one you just posted... but for the size of my plant it's still pretty huge :08:

Also that tiny pup that emerged 2 weeks ago turned out to be a very nice sword pup!!! :woohoonaner::woohoonaner::woohoonaner::woohoonaner:

Re: Valor_X & Backyard Banana Joe - Who can fruit a Praying Hands pup first?

Haven't seen an update from BBJ in a while :waving: so I guess I'll post one

The main plant is pushing out some huge monster leaves but isn't growing vertically as much as my Orinoco's are.
I suspect this 1st generation mother plant won't grow that tall compared to the following pups.

The tiny pup from my last posts got THICC and is growing like crazy.
Also another sister pup came out recently and it's also looking PHAT :ha: :ha:
Definitely a very healthy corm growing under there so I'm happy :woohoonaner:

They're for sure drawing a lot of energy but I'm going to leave them on because ultimately my goal is to get a nice healthy mat established.

The 1st pup nearly has half the girth as the mother plant

Here is another look at the pup from the side

Next to my Orinoco Mat

Gorgeous plants. My praying hands is growing pretty good but nothing like that yet. Not bad though considering it is (was) a tissue culture.

Thar she blows!!!! :woohoonaner::08:

Pstem is 10’. Had some wind that snapped off half a leaf and shredded all the rest, but..... thar she blows! Lol

Very excited to see these guys, and of course taste them. I don’t think I have ever seen these in person.

Valor X, your plant looks great! You had some setbacks but you pulled through. Great job bro!

*Note*: the contest isn’t over yet. The flower has to fully emerge. But even after we finish the contest I think we will continue to update the thread as our plants mature into full-blown mats. :woohoonaner:

You got me wondering the same thing now, lol.

Re: Valor_X & Backyard Banana Joe - Who can fruit a Praying Hands pup first?

Banana "nectar" or "honey" actually tastes very good. Both male and female flowers have nectar. You have to fight the bees for it though. Riots over who has the right to the nectar can get rather fierce :08:

Re: Valor_X & Backyard Banana Joe - Who can fruit a Praying Hands pup first?

Since it's the beginning of the month here's an update on mine. I'll also follow up next month.

The newest freshly opened surfboard is huge and actually slightly bigger than anything the taller Orinoco has put out so far.
How big can Praying Hand leaves get? Anything bigger than these 6 footers is going to blow my mind :ha:

It's main pup is becoming a monster and putting out it's own mini surfboards and getting in the way of the mother plant.
It's girth is already getting close to the mother plant as well.

Closeup of the main pup next to the mother plant

The other pup is also nice and fat

A wider shot showing
Blue Java, 1000 Fingers, Praying Hands, Orinoco

Plant(s) look great! My praying hands is likely the most impressive grower in my collection. From TC to 9 or 10 ft overall in 2 months.. its a runner for sure.

Thanks! And yes that's for sure!
TC -> 10ft in 2 months is unreal

No doubt if I removed the pups from the mother plant mine would have blown up like that too.
But now I'm expecting at least 2 bunches next year lol
