Unsure what's going to happen with this flag!
 

Alrighty, this pisang ceylon must be stressing,:islandsharkbanana: and I knew it was a runt to begin with, but now at 6.5' to the top of it's growth point it's flagging, and the p-stem is only about 2-2.5" in diameter. This is the one leaning into my screening on the right. After planting it a month later it began leaning more and more. I'm gonna have to support it somehow. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of a bunch I get from this being it's so thin.

I wouldn't waste any time finding a way to prop/support this plant because it is so slender.

Hahaha Oh don't I know. Months ago I was HOPING that it would of been tall enough before flagging and I was just going to let the bananas rest onto the roof. Guess that plan is out now! I'm guessing since the plant isn't very hardy I might not even get that much production out of it, but we'll see. I'm going to TRY to sway the flower stalk to go opposite the direction of the leaning. But I suppose I'm going to get some 1 1/4 PVC and build a prop like I've seen some do on here. I have noticed ALL but one of my Pisang Ceylons lean like this after some time. The one that hasn't is the only one that's getting 100% full sun all day long. The others are getting between 20-30% shade time through the day. I'm sure our daily rain hasn't help either since the leaning has gotten worse throughout the day and when the new leaves have been emerging, they've acted like cups holding water.

Here's updated pics! The flower has emerged! It looks a little small, which I expected, but I cannot wait to see what the runt is going to do! Can't wait til my really nice ones gets flowers too!




Here some pics of another Pisang Ceylon that I have. It's doing extreamly well! The pup at the base is going up for auction today!

That's because it was stuck in a 25 gal pot in the BACK end of a nursery with 4 pups (2 were adults more hardy than this one) and it wasn't getting very good sun or being cared for very well. The other two have came back with a vengance (as you can see one in the pics above), sold one small pup, and now the med. sized pup has taken off crazy wild too all putting out a new leaf per week! I think the damage to this one was just irreversable unless I topped it off down low on the plant. I just wanted to see what it would do if I hadn't. It seems to be stressed as it's flowered a lot earlier than it's normal height and due to it having not been taken care of! I hope the other two will flower this fall! They're around the same height as this one. What's bad is, the p-stem of the pup attached to it is thicker than the mother! There's 3 pups on it right now.

Here's updated pics of the flower from yesterday and today. It's got such a beautiful maroon coloring, the pictures doesn't give it any justice at all! I hope in two or three days I see some hands

You have nothing to lose by propping the plant up. Having the flower alone is worth keeping the plant going. Who knows, you might even be rewarded with small edible fruits. As slender as the plant is, it couldn't produce very heavy fruit but it makes it easier to support. Use three 1-1/2" diameter bamboo poles in a tripod fashion under the apex where the stem bends down. This will provide a more stable support than 2 poles. Thus the entire plant is supported, not just the fruit stem.

GREAT IDEA Chong, THANKS! But I'm going to do it out of 1 1/2" PVC. I was at Lowes but was rushed out so I forgott to get more PVC. I'm going combine your idea and add to it, making the tripod, and at the top use 60 degree elbows and connect it together around the top of the p-stem! Hope I can get to it tomorrow. Right now I just have proped up by one 1 1/2" PVC pipe.

Yeah, I know to only expect a small handfull of nanas, if any really come out at all... but I love the flower, so it's gonna stay til the end.
