Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
You do realize this is going to be extremely subjective, no?
1. Maqueño Type 2 (the huge ones - this is Gros Michel) 2. Orito (Sucrier-group) 3. Morado (Lacatan) 4. Limon (Red Iholene) 5. Orinoco (when used as a plantain) 6. Rosadito (red-skinned and pink-fleshed Sucrier-types) 7. Chunki-huasi (Kichua sweet plantians; my guess is these are Hua Moa) 8. Giant Plantain 9. Gran Nain 10. Seda (ripe Silk Plantain) |

Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
1) whatever is ripe now.
2) whatever gets ripe after that 3) whatever is the next to ripen and so on. If I only had one, it would be Misi Luki or Belle. |

Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
my 11 year old son asked me to put it up there so the can start a list of all the banana plants he wants to get... haha
my 11 year old and 8 year old want to grow all kinds of different banana's so when they get fruit they can take them to school and share them with other kids in class. |
Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
I'm surprised Ice Cream isn't in there more. I always heard it's the best tasting. Nice to hear Misi Luki is up there! Maybe in 2011 I'll have some!!

Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
Like most other fruits, there are categories of Banana tastes. For example:
Sweet Fruity Creamy Musky ... and when you get into cooking, there are favorites for certain dishes as well. Getting the tastes into categories takes a lot of the subjectiveness out of the question, because some people are more interested in a Fruity tasting (think overtones of Peach flavor) than in a Sweet taste, and visa versa. |
Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
Very Good point...
Ok then pretend you have a lot of kids that can't wait to try a banana that tastes like Vanilla Ice Cream Lets stick with Sweet and fruity tasting... haha Or put the category of flavor with the list submission... :03: Quote:

Misi Luki will get you sweet, creamy and fruity. 3 out of 4 ain't bad.

In this case, nice apple cider overtone. Though admittedly, a minority of tastebuds do not pick it up.

Richard:
Do you sell stuff at Farmer's market? If so what day are they open? and hours? That's my favorite place to buy fruits and plants. I can not promise but I'll try to go if you can give me the address. My family will go to SD on Aug 17, Sept 23, Oct 19. Unless something happen otherwise. |

Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
1) manzano
2) manzano 3) manzano 4) manzano 5) manzano Did I mention manzano ? So far after 25 + varieties, manzano's are my top 5. I have more varieties growing that I have not tried yet, so I'll leave room for others. Honorable mention for Belle, Namwah, Nino. I know that climate, fertility, water, other growing conditions,ect... will effect the taste of many banana varieties. Maybe that's (part) of why there is so much subjectivity in taste. |

Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
I have to agree with this list containing the best for the most part...
Someone asked about Velutina. I've tasted a 'ripe' one (as ripe as it can get before it completely hardens)... it tastes to me like very bitter celery. I wouldn't suggest eating it for fear of losing a tooth. lol! My slightly different list: 1) Blue Java 2) Sweetheart 3) Dwarf Red 4) Belle 5) Goldfinger 6) Orinoco 7) Mysore 8) Cuban Red 9) Manzano 10) Praying Hands Blandest flavored: -also ones I've since gotten rid of- 1) Burmese Blue 2) Enano Gigante 3) Pitogo (tastes like plain mashed potatoes) 4) 1000 fingers 5) Saba Quote:

Re: top 10 Banana's by taste...
Best grocery store bananas (until I can weigh in with my own fruit :))
One thing I found interesting about the varieties other than Cavendish is that you really have to be careful about how ripe they are... with Cavendish you can peel it whilst slightly green and still get a good eat... with Reds and Manzanos you end up getting a whole lotta starchy, banana peely stuff that sucks all the moisture out of your mouth if you try eating it before it's ripe enough.
