stratification
 

hi

i did read on some websites that musa sikkimensis stratification on 4 C for several weeks will improve germination.
of course i understand that most musa seeds don't need stratification.
but if we look at sikkimensis native habitat we see that there are cold spells there for a long time.

have anybody tried stratification with m.sikki ?
most people wil say that there is no need for stratification or say it makes seeds dormant but haven't tried stratification yet, me and some other people want some solid information.

with stratification i don't mean freezes i mean cold temps like 4 / 5 C'

It is used for germinating Musella lasiocarpa but I have not heard of
people using it for sikkimensis. I would say, give it a try.

It is said that this could also kill the musa-embryo, but again this is sikkimensis, I am also interested in your results!

i decided to dry stratification now, im afraid that a wet stratification wil soften the seeds too much which wil make them rot when placed in warm enviroment.
already 1 seeds has become too soft on the outside and mold is developing on it.

so it seems that dry cold stratification is certainly better.
i got some palm seeds - a butia species that also come from high cold altitudes and with them i had the same problem.

Hi ,what temperature will kill the embryo?10°C or less? In that moment I use 30°C (day) 15-19°C(night) I had a sprout in 12days for a sikkim Manipur but just one do I do right?

you are doing it right, try 35 C day and 10 C - 15 C night.
they say alot of musa embryo will be killed at lower then 10 c'.
but nobody knows what kills sikkimensis seeds maybe a few freezes wil, but if you look at the native habitat of sikkimesis you see that freezes and cold temps occur there.

i am now stratificating at 4 C, if musella isn't killed by this temp sikkimensis won't be killed either.

ok about three weeks has passed and i stratificated the regular sikki and ''daj giant''
i have put the seeds on a temp about 28 C with a floor heating that is slightly warmer.

i totally excluded light for a few seeds.

i put some seeds under grow lamps at 22 C

and i have some seeds at minor temp fluctations

lets see how long it wil take to germinate, my butia seeds are slightly deformed which is a good sign.
