Siam Ruby an Borderlon issues
 

These two survive winters here in the ground. First year I had them they did pretty well. Past year all they do is wilt like crazy and have pups like crazy. Pups die off an larger pups do the same. It's mainly the Siam that has the die off issue. It gets very hot here and heat index is always up there. Do they just not like all the heat and straight almost 8 hrs of dead sunlight. Is that to much for them? Maybe the corms were never that great since both were in pots they were outgrowing when I got them. Was never a issue with anything else I have.

I always liked trying the red bananas, but found them much harder to over winter than any green ones - UNTIL I got a Bordelon some years back (that first plant is in my avatar). The next year I planted it in it's own bed in the middle of the yard and it bloomed and fruited amazingly that summer and then made a clump of 7 or 8 - 6-7' "pups" to pot up and store indoors for the next season. I have a brother in Gastonia NC and the sun does seem hotter for you-all down there ;-) .. but .. wouldn't it be even more so in Bordelonville LA where this variety first appeared? Anyway - hope their growth and vigor pick up for you. Thanks for sharing your experince!

Mine survived an it's the real deal. It was in a mulched bed which stayed pretty damp in the winter. I put 2" of mulch over the corm and it came right back.

Wow.
Is this the first year that you have done this or have you been getting those results consistently year after year with both of those banana plants at your last property and this new one ... just curious.

I have Bordelons that ritually fold up each day in the heat and unfold after the sun goes down.

I can post a pic if it helps diagnose your challenge.
Also my Siams are not the most cool tolerant of bananas they love the heat and indirect sunlight; but hate coming indoors for the winter. They are my only plant which dies back to the corm.
I hope yours sort themselves out soon.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I have also noticed the Bordelon folding phenomenon. Sometimes it's just because it is a hot day and sometimes it is because it is really thirsty! I also had the same experience with my Siams. After losing a few completely over the winter, I started paying my closer attention but even if they made it thru New Years by Spring the p-stem would rot and it would survive only thru new pups when the heat and light returned.

These are Bordelons in containers and are reacting to the intense sun and heat .
Plant on the far left is an Ice cream
At the end of the day even more leaves will be folded over still reducing the leafs exposure to the sun.
They will return to normal once they cool back down and removed from the direct sun.

Siam was left in the ground for one winter. We moved this past winter so dug up an brought with me. Yes they both just always wilt. Borderlon looks better once sun goes down. But confused why they both have die off or don't really grow? Think I might just not water them as often an see what happens.

Off topic but a place in NC called Plants Delight over winters AEAE. I thought they were nuts, but went once in the summer,then came back next year an it was huge. They have nowhere to store an nowhere it could have grown that fast if not the same plant. They have very icy,snow covered cold winters.

These are Pufferfish's banana plants which are not looking too well.

They get the same amount of water,fert as all my other plants in my sig thriving.
