Re: Red Kru blooming
Awesome, Jarred!
How tall is the plant? |
Re: Red Kru blooming
Probably about eight or nine feet of pseudostem, maybe 12'-13' overall.
I'll post an overall picture of the whole plant so you can see. |
Re: Red Kru blooming
Very cool! It looks like a single plane plant. Are they all that way?
|
Re: Red Kru blooming
This is one of the ugliest bananas I'm growing!
It's a slow twist. It's not on a single plane like Strelitzia but in photos it looks that way. I say it's one of the ugliest because the leaves quickly brown at the edges and get real tattered. The pseudostem can't be cleaned up really well, there's always an abundance of fiberous brown dead matter no matter how much you try and peel off it comes right back, so I leave it alone. And the colors aren't really anything to write home about. The bud is emerging today. Between this rain I'll try and snap some new photos. :2182: |
Re: Red Kru blooming
My Re Iholene is similar - leaves get gold and tattered pretty quick and the pseudo stems are always shaggy.

Re: Red Kru blooming
Sounds to me like you guys are not quite the surgeon of pseudo stems that I am! I go after mine with a single edge razor blade and get all that brown stuff off! :2727:

Re: Red Kru blooming
Congratulations - awesome pics and fruit. Is the pink colour confined to the skin or are the ends of the fruit slightly coloured too?

Re: Red Kru blooming

Re: Red Kru blooming
I really like the looks of this banana- really nice looking fruits congrats

Re: Red Kru blooming
Yes, I tasted the last bunch I had a few months ago. They are fruity and delicious! One of my favorites. The bunch bloom to ripening time is very fast, too. The colors are awesome. So many reasons why I like it, but yes, the flavor is way superior to store bought bananas. They are very fruity aromatic and sweet.

Re: Red Kru blooming
Jarred are there two types of Kru or is red Kru the propper name for it ?
I ask because I have one and it was just called plain Kru. I got it a year ago from a dealer in the states as a small TC and the damn thing hasn't grown an inch since I got it. Excellent pics by the way. |
Re: Red Kru blooming
I've read and been told that there are two, red and green. HOWEVER, Agri-Starts, the big tissue culture company where most of the nurseries get theirs from, only lists it as "Kru", not red or green. Theirs is red though.
AnnaJW has a plant labeled kru that looks green here: http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showp...=500&ppuser=14 I've read JeffreyP once wrote that Red Kru can turn green by a shift in soil PH. |
Re: Red Kru blooming
btw, Mark, I would nurture it if its not moving, when season comes you might want to dig around it and pack some compost down by the roots. These are worth the tlc effort!

Re: Red Kru blooming
Thanks Jarred. I would take your advice BUT its still only about 5"tall and in a small pot. It wasn't from Agris that I got it . It was Eldons. After seeing yours it makes me want to persivere with this little fella all the more. Though I think it will soon follow in the path of the Namwah pearl that it came with.

Re: Red Kru blooming
Great pictures. Can't wait to see a banana bloom in person! :sumbrero:
Newbie question- do the banana flowers have a odor? good or bad? |
Re: Red Kru blooming
To me, Orinoco have a distinct scent.
There's slight variation between the cultivars. The scent is not so pleasant but it's not offensive either. |
Re: Red Kru blooming
^^^ Thanks for the reply. The thought struck me as I was looking at your photos for some reason.....:2757:
