Red Jewel Blooming pics
Just noticed one of my Red Jewel is blooming!
http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Musa_Red_Jewel I'll keep the thread updated with future pics! |
Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
Nice pics, Jarred! Is it a cultivar of laterita/ornata?

Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
Really don't know. It came from Agristarts, and it's somewhat new, so not a lot of people have them yet. They list them under their regular Musa category, not under the new ornamental flowering Musa category.
I think these might be an edible but we will have to wait a few weeks and see. I went in on a partial tray with JeffreyP last year (well not really in on them as I got mine after he got the tray), but Jeff also thought at the time that these might turn out to be an edible. Maybe Gabe knows something about them... lol |
Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
But now that I know at what height it blooms at (we were even guessing it might be an 8 footer), I'll dig up the others I have and plant them much closer together, and alongside this little mat that's going.

Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
it looks to be a Rhodochlamys type or perhaps a Eumusa X Rhodochlamys but looks very unlikely to be edible. keep posting pictures though, I have not seen it bloom yet.

Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
Great pics Jarred , how long did it take to flower from TC ?
Up for a pup if you have one at dome point. I'm thinking od getting some stuff from Agri-Starts come spring , I'd like to experiment with growing TC plants on. Later Steve |
Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
About a year - year and a half to flower from TC.
This particular plant has one pup, not very vigorous if you ask me. But I will definately put you down for one. I still have about 5 other plants from that initial batch of TCs that I got that have not moved very much, but like I said, I will plant them where this one is planted and see if they shoot up. Some plants dont do good in some parts of my yard... I could set you up with one of those year old but still small TCs that I have now if you want... |

Thanks for the reply , I've PM'ed

Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
It looks very velutina like, it seems most likely a hybrid involving velutina.

Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
I agree with Gabe, the coloring reminds me of M. velutina. I am working on several ornata X ornata and ornata X velutina crosses.

Re: Red Jewel Blooming pics
I was able to locate a nice pup on of one of them and mail it to Steve.
