Hello fellow banana growers,

I just wanted to share a picture of my Raja Puri blooms. I got 3 blooms this season from the same mat. The first one choked in June, but soon after another bloomed in July, then another in September, and unfortunately if the weather keeps up, another may bloom any day now. I am not sure the September bloom will not have enough time, nor the optimal conditions to develop with our Northern CA (9B) winter coming soon. Does anyone know how to speedup the banana development on one psedostem, without pushing growth on tall adjacent pups??

Well you can leave only one hand and cut off the rest. this should speed up the fruit filling of the remaining hand.

Thanks for the advice. One of the challenges I have come to find is trying to time the blooms here in N. CA..

I noticed pictures in your gallery of the Williams variety blooming in your Davis yard. Has this variety proven repeated cold-hardiness for you? How do the bananas taste?

I'm always looking for a new type to grow here in San Ramon. So far I've gotten Raja, Ice Cream, and D. Namwah to bloom. The following have proven cold-hardy enough to make it through my winters without protection, and I'm still waiting for them to get tall enough to bloom: Cardaba, Belle, Orinoco, Mysore, Nino, CA Gold, Goldfinger, Praying Hands, and Misi Luki. Also experimenting with Dwarf Brazilian, FHIA -18 and -03 this season. All three will have about 4-6’ of trunk going into winter. I've gotten one or two pups from Mike in Antioch. He had mentioned you as an avid banana grower here in the area. Once again, thanks for the reply, and if you’re ever down in the East Bay, you’re more than welcome to stop by. - James

There are some fellows in the Modesto area CRFG chapter that have some pretty good experience with this sort of situation.

I like the second pic :) I have rajapuri to, maybe i going to plant him next spring, and dig him up at the end of the growing season :)
