Just curious why this plant is pupping so far from pstem. Three pups and all there 8" to 12" from pstem. Is this a clue to what variety this is ? Or just loose soil.

Just my 2 cents maybe the pups have there own root system they look like they are tall but i cant tell by the pic.

maybe you buried the corm a little too deep?

do you not know what variety it is?

There about 12". Typically the pups form close to the p-stem or corm. This is how the pups usually come up.

That pic doesn't surprise me.
I recently had a pup pop about 2 feet from mother plant. It was doing great. I dug it up to bring to a buddyz house....found out it was from a corm I lost to the freeze.
Doubt you have that issue since there is 1 on each side. Did you plant this nanner on top of an old corm? I threw a frozen corm into the pond in January...yea, there is a 7 foot tree growing in the cat-tails right now!

There are three pups ,the white spot in front is another pup coming up even farther away.
No old corm in the ground,they are coming from the plant in the pic.

Now that is kinda freaky.. being so far from the momma.. May she said.. get outta here; you guys are on your own... :^) I like it when they come up 3-4 inches away instead on top of the mother corm, never have seen such a vast separation.. Very unique Tony :^)

I thought that was normal! This is the 2nd summer for our banana that survived the harsh winter. I thought our banana was toast when all of a sudden it appeared in the same spot then a few weeks later, a full 13 inches to the southeast of that one, another one popped through. As far as I know, because the nurseries don't know the names around here of the bananas, it's a musa basjoo.
Could it be the variety? Just curious, what direction from the mother plant did your pop through?

If it was mine I'd carefully remove the soil between one of the pups and the mom, then take pictures of what's there.

Good idea. They seem to grow horizontally and them surface. I'll dig around and take pic's

I started to dig around it but it goes deep. Looks like the pups are coming from deep off the corm. Checked the plant and it's not planted any deeper than the others.

Something like that would be attributable to variety, and likely not because of a condition or something you did to it when planting. If you're wondering about the variety, you know the best way to find out...wait until it flowers.

The first year my Pisang Klotek pupped it sent pups from deep on the corm. Gabe knows first hand.

How interesting, Tony. I sure hope my pups don't come up too far away from the corm because they'll be coming up in the grass if this is the case! :ha:


Someone mentioned it might have something to do with burying the corm too deep, which worries me because I recently buried a year old Basjoo plant in the garden, a foot deeper than it was in the pot. I mean that thing is deep, and it's in a garden that's somewhat narrow. Hope the pups emerge close to the stem. Guess I'll see soon...
