Pot Size for SD Cavendish
 

I have a super dwarf that is about two feet tall now and i was wondering if it would do ok in a pot that is aprox 1'5" across the top and about 2' tall?
I want it to have maximum space to grow but i dont want to harm it either

Any input is greatly appreciated!

the bigger the better, then you wont have to transplant again for awhile.
I assume you want to leave it in the container to grow for your zone.30 gal.

Thanks for your answer, yes it will stay in a container its whole life. I live in a colder climate, so i want it to get nice and large.

I was under the impression if the pot was too big it wouldnt do well, but you said excacly what i hoped you would say!

Could having a pot that is too small for it be a reason it hasn't produced any pups? Its my first bonana and is doing very well, but no pups yet and I've had it since last July.

yes in deed, like a fish in a aquarium it only grows to the size of its environment.

Your good.....these are ugly I know, but they will serve the purpose for a year or two.
The bigger the pot the better for a banana .....YOU WILL TO DO THIS WHEN IT IS ACTIVELY GROWING IN A FEW MONTHS....if you do it now it will probably rot due to the pot size and human nature to OVERWATer when the plant looks SICK.

This is a good size for your plant however the containers are UGLY>

These are blue Ugly heavy plastic 55 gallon drums cut in thirds or halves.
I will paint them so they will not be so ......attractive.
The barrels were free......very clean.
1 drum is two containers
These can bought on Craigs List for 8.00 each..SOOOO its 4.00 for a 27 gallon heavy duty ugly container. Black is hard to come by:08:

Wow, those are huge! Might not be purdy, but when you have nice plants in then who will be looking at the pots?

So can I ask what happens to the plants when they are put in large pots that causes them to die?

My plants are all house plants that always stay in doors and so far they look great if I can maintain my beginners luck!

TIming ,Timing. Only go to a larger size when your plant is Actively growing and your plant will have at least 4 months of filing that pot with those hungry roots.
Overwatering is my biggest concern ...

Almost never transplant them unless you have to
during the cool dormant months of no vigorous growth (winter).

Transplant only when its actively growing.

If the temps are too cool for fast growth, over potting allows the soil to stay too wet and encourages rot. When the temps are warm, it's not a problem.

Not generally. If they are growing rapidly in a pot that is too small, they tend to pup more, not less.

This photo is a couple years old, as you can see this plant is pupping freely in a
smaller container, I believe the container size is 5 gal.
It's tight in there, but they were happy.

It was spring and these were soon split they did get a little a little tight in there over the winter though.

I actually took the photo because a corm on the left side of the pot became dislodged and started to grow at an acute right angle. It eventually sorted itself out.

Different cultivars behave differently in different environments, it's best to learn about the ones that you're growing.

My AAA Dwarf Cavendish do pup in the pots.

These were potted Jan-16-13, AAB Maricongo & AAA Morado.

FYI, plant to harvest for a Maricongo here is about 11 months.
