Plantains, cooking bananas
 

Hi all,
Can someone list the plantain/cooking bananas that you know of? They have no a-peel :D for me whatsoever, if I am so blessed to have bananas I want immediate satifaction of eating them on the spot. No muss, no fuss. Thanks for your help!

There are really hundreds of types of cooking and plantain bananas, in the US, there are still many available, and if you want to avoid buying one on accident, it might be easier to advise what you should buy, instead of what you shouldn't.

What kind of plant are you looking for? Other than being a dessert type (those that are sweet and can be eaten raw), there are other factors to consider such as how much room you have, will it be in the ground or in a container and what type of growing conditions you have.

The only banana I had(until a couple of months ago) was ice cream, which has successfully overwintered here 4-5 yrs. I live in zone 8a AL, hot and humid and drought stricken. No problem watering here for me though. I have a 1/2 acre sandy soil, all bananas that I grow will be outside in the dirt nanners. None to be brought inside. First freeze for me was Nov 3 2006, and except for that darn Easter cold snap my last freeze date would be Feb 18th 2007. I don't think the freeze did any harm to my mat though as no new foliage was peeking out the top yet.
I now have a Manzano, Praying Hands, RajaPuri, Saba, and the ornamental Rojo Zebina. It's okay to tell me if I have made a mistake(zonewise) on any of these, it doesn't hurt to try!

I used to not be interested in cooking them but I've had a change of heart this year. It'll grow on you :) well, maybe...

We have a place down the street called Hugo's.
Excellent Cuban's, and incredible plantanos
just mouth watering good.

Sorry if i derailed somewhat, just wanted to give some props to the cooked variety

What is an excellent sweet cooking type?
Got to love those sweet fried platanos, especially when they are very sweet and soft on the inside, and crispy dark on the outside.
