Newest addition...Ensete "Tandarra Red"
 

I got an Ensete "Tandarra Red" today. Its a pretty good sized plant for a decent price. Ill post pics tomorrow but Im wondering... what the max. size is for these? and... What makes it different from Ensete Maurelii?

Tandarra red = Maurelli.

It is the same plant. Tandarra red may be a shade smaller but it is the same plant.

great marketing by the nursery though :waving:

Thanks for the comments. I think its very similar to Maurelii but the price was good so I wouldnt mind even if it was Maurelii. Main difference seems to be the smaller size. Greg, I didnt get my plant from the link posted, I got it from a local nursury for around 35 dollars. Heres a pic of it. The coloring doesnt show very well in the picture but at least it gives you an idea of the size. Its not in the ground even though it kind of looks like it is. The pot was too deep for me to sucessfully re-pot it, but the pot happens to be biodegradable and when it breaks (I guess that happens when the roots start to break out of the pot) Im going to plant it in the ground and see what happens.


Ill keep you posted. So far it has yet to prove itself different from maurelii but it seems to be much more heat tolerant (It was sitting in full sun at the nursury with 4 days of triple digit heat and it was pretty dry too!)

I just came across this thread and I figured I should update it! So here is my Ensete "Tandarra Red" 2 months later...


And I couldnt resist adding a pic of my plumeria pudica! It has about a month left outside before I dig it up for the winter. Im a little worried about damaging its root system.

Thanks for looking! As you can see Ensete "Tandarra Red is a very strong grower (Its in a pot and would be growing much faster if it was in the ground, which it will be next year). Not sure if I can tell the difference between Tandarra Red and Maurelli.

Just wanted to add that you can use the white thing hanging on the fence for scale. In July it didnt even make it up to the white thing and now it has passed it and is slightly taller than the 6 foot tall fence!

I certainly don't mean this as a criticism, just an observation...

but it sure looks stressed in all that sun and reflected heat. Seems like it would be happier, and more colorful, if it were in a shadier spot.

I really appreciate the observation! I think the wind really took a lot out of it since we had some severe storms in NYC this week, but its also constantly dry, so I think that and the heat wore it out a little bit too! It only gets morning and early afternoon sun (its shaded as of this time), but its my hottest part of the yard and easily reaches over 80F even on days in the 70s. Im going to water it now since it needs some water badly and next year it will be in the ground in a shadier spot so it should look much better. Its only in a small pot right now so considering all the neglect, its one tough plant!
