Newby question.....

Bought a house last October and it had some banana trees in a lfower bed. I cut them down and mulched them after first hard frost when the leaves turned. Turns out there were 9 plants there ranging from 6" in daimeter to about 2.5". I have 5 coming up so far. I know I need to separate them. How do I know which one(s) to leave? Been doing some research on this but still confused. Any help appreciated.

Welcome to bananas.org.
I would leave the biggest one for now and maybe one strong follower. They will produce more pups as growing season progresses.
Where are you located? Post some photos of your plants to give us a better idea.

This is Easy determine how many you want to grow from that mat, if you want another mat dig the one's out to move, and the one's you don't want to keep or move you can pot to give to anyone or you can cut them, or you can kill them. Where you are might help / growing zone plant type if known, If not and your in the South people here can help as they get bigger w/ a photo posted in your thread.. :^)

No, Dirk, you do not need to separate them. It depends very much, what you want to do with
them. If you live in a warm enough region to grow them for fruit, then yo may want to
separate them into singles, when they are much bigger than now.

Your reference to "first hard frost" suggests however, that that is a non-starter, and you
may only able to grow them for decorative purpose, as do I. I that case you may find, that
they look better, if they are left in pads of 2 to four, as I did here in HZ6:

For better replies to your questions, it may be helpful to state where you live, or at least
indicate your hardiness zone.

Best,
Olaf
