The Mysore Propagation Project
 

Even though I removed my Mysore because of BSV, I figured that I'd try and salvage the corm. So I did, and I cut it up into pieces, treated them with rooting hormone, and then planted them in pots with a well-draining mix. I have about 17 or 18 pieces planted in these pots (each pot has one except for the pot on the far left, which has 7 or 8 small pieces). Hopefully I'll get around 10 plantlets from this, possibly more. Hopefully, they won't be expressing the viral DNA. If they're healthy, I'm going to donate them to low-income families through the food bank that I intern at. Let's hope this turns out well! :08:

Thanks. :) That's actually the whole point of the new program that we're doing at the food bank. It's called the Home Garden Program. We're building gardens for low income families at their houses and teaching them how to grow their own food. That way they can be more self-sustaining and help break their dependence on the food bank for food. It's so rewarding! :08:

Good luck Andreas! The sad truth is that the chances of getting even 1 BSV free pup are minimal to nil. If you really want to produce a BSV free Mysore specifically from your plant,look into TC and into a relatively new protocol ITC has developed developed that has been successful at producing healthy plantlets from a diseased plant. It takes time and effort though!

You are doing it for a very good reason but the start material is dooming the whole thing. Even if the first leafs come healthy or even if they produce a few healthy leafs,dont assume they are heathy,the diseased leafs will follow before the end of the growing season....Just a heads up! You dont want to be spreading BSV infected bananas around.

That's unfortunate. The good thing is that I also have what's probably an Orinoco corm and also will be digging up a Raja Puri corm, so I can propagate those too. I'm going to keep them just in case to see how things go. It'll be cool to see them emerge from the dirt in their pots! :)

It will surely be cool to see those bits come up as pups! Good luck with the project,the corms of your other bananas should provide good material to start spreading the love and help those families :)

Things are finally starting to get going! Three Mysore peepers are just emerging:







I should have a fourth one coming real soon. I've also expanded the operation to include Raja Puri corm bits and pups as well as a bit of corm from the unknown plant.

UPDATE: I have five Mysore pups sprouted so far. So far, four of them are showing symptoms of BSV, and the other one appears to be clean. They are still small, so I will have to wait and see if the issue resolves itself.

As for the other plants that I am propagating, all of my Raja Puri pups and the Orinoco pup have come up. I donated a large Orinoco, a large Raja Puri, a sprouted Orinoco, and a sprouted Raja Puri to families in need through the food bank. Today, I also donated a freshly cut off Namwah pup to a family and helped them plant it in their yard. They had an 11 or 12 year old boy who was really excited about it. Boy, does it feel good to give back. :woohoonaner:
