My Backyard Nana Plants, 2021
 

New year, tns of exciting stuff going to be happening in the backyard this year! Currently have nine racks of banana in various stages of ripeness, and a lot of trees still to flower. It’s going to be good :lurk:


First of all, I planted SH-3640 High Noon in a full sun spot with plenty of mulch:





I also planted the real deal FHIA-2 Mona Lisa:





As well as the Green AeAe:





And the PR Morado which already has a pup:

Wow! Major crop. Congratulations.

Can you put together some comparison pics (profile, pstem, flower, whatever else looks interesting/different) with descriptions (height, circumference) of your RP and Dwarf Brazilian? You have them both flowering at the same time so would be great to get some comparison info. since these two are suppose to be quite similar.

The Dwarf Brazilian flowered a lot shorter than its supposed to (stunted?) so the height factor won’t be accurate, but I’ll be happy to post pics comparing them!

Yes they’re papayas! I am eating the ones the papaya fruit flies aren’t :08:

Great job Joe! Looking good.
The blossom end rot might be a result of low calcium. Or too much water, as calcium is absorbed when the soil is dry.

You can dry your eggshells and run through a coffee grinder.. or use a soluble hydroponic supplement such as Cal-Mag.

Great pix Joe ! Thanks for sharing. I am considering planting some bananas between houses similar to where you green AeAe and Manzano appear to be. I was concerned about the hours of sunlight they will get. But yours seem to be doing well. Out of curiosity, how many hours of sunlight do your bananas get between the houses?

No problem! I'm not super organized like that, so I don't know how many hours they get. But, they get sun from when the sun rises above the roof to when it sinks below, so...... If I were you, tomorrow I would go outside every hour or so and see how long there is sun. Also keep in mind that the suns rays don't have touch the ground to hit the plant if the plant is tall enough to catch them.

I harvested a bunch of Tall Namwa, pictured with a 14 inch Tramontina (which I highly recommended)







There is a lot of damage on this bunch, but all the squirrels that did this damage are now dead.






This was a complete suprise, Pisang Ceylon is blooming!

Dwarf Cavendish bunch was harvested and ended up tasting like a crappy store bought banana (didn’t ripen properly). After these two pups fruit this mat gets replaced with something else.

Thank you! Right now it contains green beans, kale, collards, peppers, tomatoes, basil, celery, sweet potatoes, cabbage, Calabaza pumpkins, and some crappy zucchini plants that never produced anything are on their way out.

Your patch is doing great! Squirrels are a pain. Once they get the taste for nanners there is only one solution.

BBJ, how long did your dwarf namwa take to go from peeper to fruit? How long do you estimate it will take for the 2'-3' pup next to the fruiting dwarf namwa to fruit? I have a two to three foot pup and wondering if I have a channce this year for fruit.

I have a Tramontina machete too. Got mine at Lowes. Great machete!

I got my DN from Ty in November 2019 as a tissue culture. It was two or three years old Ty said because it was from a variegated parent. He kept it in a tiny pot to see if it would revert back to being variegated. Picture is about a month after receiving it....




The largest pup came up in November I think. It should fruit in maybe August? I don’t really know.

Plants and yard look amazing! Great work! Damn squirrels have tasted a few of my early bunches.. cant imagine they liked what they tasted.. will have to see..
