Musa Yunnanensis Fruit

Here is the story. About 4 years ago the late Mr. Markkus Hakkinnen of Finland sent me some seeds of Musa Yunnanensis and Musa Balbisiana he collected in China. I planted the seeds in Okinawa which has a subtropical climate. The plants grew quite well and I harvested a bunch of the M. Yunnanensis fruit last month for the first time. I posted the photos for everyone to see. Here is the link: Musa Yunnanensis Photo by sittingbull193 | Photobucket
Cheers!

Thank you for your reply Melendez. The flavor is much like the Monkey Banana grown in the Bonin Islands, Japan. It is very sweet indeed!

That's great Mauro!

Do you have any idea what subspecies/variety of yunnanensis it is?

Kind regards,
Remko.

Hi Remko! I have no idea which subspecies or variety it is. Mr. Markkus didn’t tell me which region in China he collected the seeds. He just told me they were M. Yunnanensis seeds. Now, the bananas I posted should have hybrid seeds because when the M. Yunnanensis female flowers bloomed there were only M. Balbisiana male flowers in the surroundings. When these wild bananas are not pollinated the bananas will not grow and evidently fall or dry out. I will post a picture of the plant with the banana bunch when it bloomed. Dear Mauro, Can you sent to me Mr. Markkus Hakkinnen's contact? I want to ask him something about some Musa species what he collected in Viet Nam.
Thanks!

I am really sorry but Mr. Markkus Hakkinnen passed away few years ago.

I am also saddened that he died - a great loss of banana experts
