mulching banana trunks

Up until now I've been leaving the banana trunks next to garden beds to rot down or in a large pile behind where I'm growing my lady fingers.

What is everyone else doing with their trunks - after you've picked the bunches??

Here's mine -

Any suggestions or is this about as good as it gets?

Re: mulching banana trunks

I used to do that. I would chop up the P-stems and pile it around the bases of the plants. At one point I must have had a foot of p-stem mulch through the beds. Then we had that killer frost and afterwards it turned into a black slimy mess that rotted some of my plants. I ended up scraping it all out and taking truckloads to the dump. I now only compost them and then top dress the beds when I feed.
