Re: Male bud

Depending on the variety, the bud will either terminate or keep going for a long time. Whenever a bud does terminate however, there is always normally a single, odd, apical flower on the very tip of the rachis. The flower is normally a male flower, but in some fe'i it is some kind of female flower and makes a small fruit too.

This is Musa balbisiana, which tends to have buds which keep going long after the fruit is gone.

This is Musa rubinea, it had a terminating bud.

Bracts left on.

With the bracts removed to see the flower.

Apical flower and terminating buds from a Bluggoe type.

'Toraka Gatagata', a fe'i banana showing it's apical flower.

'Poti'a', a fe'i, apical fruit diagram.

On the Kandrians and the Agristarts Misi Luki I have seen the male bud completely fall off. At the then end it is just this white bud with no bracts that falls off. If I see it and I have a Camera I will get a picture.

Re: Male bud

I have seen some flowers still flowering after the fruit is ripe and removed. Haven't ever tried to leave one on long enough to see what it does.

"Horn" types, such as Rhino Horn came to an end fairly quickly - just faded out.
