Just ordered a Dwarf Cavendish
 

Wife's gonna kill me but ordered yet another Banana.

Thought I had bought a Dwarf Cavendish and discovered I have a Bordelon. Nice plant, but was hoping for edible bananas so ordered the Dwarf Cavendish.

I want this to be a inside plant from the beginning so it's used to being inside. A sunny window isn't a problem, but I didn't have any luck with a cold hardy banana that I tried to grow from a plant I bought online as it never did anything then finally died. I don't want another loss so am looking for advice from members. Before I used a Miracle Grow cactus potting soil.

Looking for some advice....

Sandy who posts on here from northern tropics greenhouse has a lot of good bananas. I would definitely check her website out. I have ordered from her a different variety of bananas and elephant ears and they have all been in great health. As for the indoor growing the problem I had was overwatering causing rot. Get a moisture meter as the soil down a few inches can be super wet and the top dry. Also I used miracle grow and am trying to get away from it as it holds too much moisture. I would try the palm and cactus mix with at least a third of it being sand, perlite and hardwood chips to aid in the drainage. I grew mine last year indoors (4 basjoos, 2 dwarf cavendish) from about 4" to over 2 1/2 feet in just 3 months, then they went outdoors and were over 10ft by august. When I brought them back in I had to cut them down and then I didn't realize the soil was too moist and with the slow winter growth they rotted.

I've learned by my mistakes too. When I brought my potted banana in for the winter a couple of years ago I thought I would need to water it just like when it was outside. Needless to say it rotted and died. The one I left outside I put a rose cone over it and filled the cone with cedar chips(another no no) In the spring the root ball was all soft and mushy so I dug it up and threw it away. Now I read where I should have left it in the ground to see if the Corm would throw off a shoot. Again I learned.

All the bananas I have now I've used the Miracle Grow Cactus mix, and I have a water meeter now as well that I use every day. I'm sure my wife wishes she got as much attention as I give my bananas. lol

I got a couple of Dwarf Cavendish last year and they froze back during the winter in the ground but I think it was due to being put in the ground late in the year. They came back this year and are doing well.
I tried the DC fruit while I was in Bermuda and they were very tasty. You will enjoy them alot
