It's alive!

As you know I cut down my Ae Ae not long after flowering because it sustained some serious damage in the Arctic bast we had here in Cali. Well it finally sent up a pup! So far it looks like it will have color. We'll have to wait to see if it's variegated or not but either way I'm very happy! :woohoonaner:

So that little pup was variegated, that is until our cat jumped off the fence and landed on it breaking it off at ground level. So another month goes by and it sends up another pup which my cat also jumped on breaking in half but above ground. So I decided to build a cage around it and while staking it down I noticed it has another pup growing on the opposite side that I almost stepped on! It's now safe from harm (me and the cat) under the cage. The original mother corm is completely rotted so I have no clue where these guys are coming from but I sure am happy to see them!

Momo,

When an established plant croaks, the pupping is much better that when the main p-stem is flourishing - I was shown that from the beginning. Now I now for sure. My Gran Nain x Sumatrana croaked and sent up SEVEN healthy pups. The SDC stopped new growth and sent up 4 pups - it recovered after separation. The Goldfinger is nearing fruition and has produced 5 pups - pulled them all - mama is growing like crazy. The crazy dwf twin orinocos have produced one racime and I'm pulling one 2 foot pup a week to keep the vigor in the first fruit. The little Ae Ae is recovering from overwater'n and has shown a little pup. Stress makes it all happen. The more the better!!!

You should look forward to good pupping - the pic shows a good strong new pup. As pitangadiego says - have patience!!

Oh, oh -- a hurricane may be headed my way. OMG, I may become swamped in banana plants!!!

Mitchel,

That is precisely why I keep telling people to never give up. I have Praying Hands pups coming up from corms you can't even see, because they have rotted off and have been gone for 2 years. But deep down something survives. I have Monthan trunk that fell over in January in the wind we had, and has just been layng around the yard ever since. Last week I cut up the corm and planted 8 "eyes" or pups.

Re: It's alive!

The pupping of a banana is variable. I have found that the Ae Ae will pup about as well as any banana. That is if it is during the hottest and wettest time of the year, and the pup must be stable before cooler weather sets in. One summer after the Ae Ae fruit was harvested I sawed down the large trunk. It was too big to put in the trash so I pushed it under a hedge. Their was no rhizome just the leafy part of the stalk. To my surprise the leaf (at the cut end) started to pup. I probably harvested four pups and started to establish them in pots. They were looking very good when I sold them in October. The next summer the nurseryman told me that they all died. The pups needed a longer summer. I do think the a little potassium nitrate would have given the pups a better chance in surviving.

Great news on the Ae Ae!

Even though I have heard of it not being beneficial, I've often wondered about adding potassium. How many of you use this as a part of your program?

This was taken a week ago. It has a new little leaf starting to emerge today. I'll get another picture soon.
