I'm seeking counseling...My banana is no longer with us.
 



my banana lasted until today. Either I accidentally murdered it or bugs did bc I came across 2 grubs. No idea if that is significant.

I have a phobia of bugs and I obsessively investigated every discoloration and then tonight I couldn't help myself to check the roots and (this is in my garage which has a heater and lights) knocked the top of the tree on a table and the pstem cracked in half. I had basically autopsied the poor thing looking for whatever bug at this point so it was thin.
I saw no bugs or like, tunnels just healthy tissue inside everywhere. So, the roots are not all dead, There are some really big long ones that are still white so I did what I could to dry up the soil (if it isn't gross bugs, it is def root rot from too much watering *which I knew not to do and was under the impression that I was doing very little watering until I got a meter thingie* and *****y soil). The soil at the top, totally dry when I stuck my finger in it, the soil at the very bottom, like under the corm, was all wet and compacted, so I got what I could out of the pot and added cactus dirt mixed with perlite and peat moss. IDK WTF i am doing, I wonder if there is a chance for a pup? I doubt it.
I am so pissed off, this tree was really doing so well, inside the garage it was putting out awesome leaves, one of the last ones was like 2 ft wide. This is so depressing. I treated this thing like a spoiled pet for almost 11 months and then this.

If anyone has any advice, or whatever, or if my ideas are wrong, or you know of a reputible place to buy a new one, or have questions, PLEASE reply, it will help me in the grieving process. hehe. seriously, tho... I have some photos from the other day of the roots. This is a travesty. I am devastated and also pissed. lol

Sounds like too much water. Does the pot drain well? This time of year it is best to let it dry out between watering, they will grow slowly or go dormant for the winter. The corm may put out some pups for you, make sure it drains well and dries out between watering.

It had wet dirt like compacted all around the "mat" (is that the term?) Anyway, it was impossible to get all that off without totally abusing the roots, so I put peat moss around it mixed with some dry cactus soil to try to suck up that water. I thought I had a brilliant idea of using one of those terracotta spikes and a wine bottle bc I figured, and it seemed like it was getting water periodically as it needed it. I also think the roots were out of room, does this typically happen in containers? Mine was 22"wide and I mean, this thing THRIVED in the SC summer humidity. I watered daily and at it's best point it had 12 beautiful leaves. It was pushing out leaves even in the garage, and it was so sudden, I first noticed the cigar leaf not fully coming out and unrolling and then the one behind it was blocked and turned pale yellow

I'd pull it, wash off all of the old soil, cut out any mushy blackness and let it dry out. Replant in some new dry cactus soil. It's worked for me before. Disclaimer: I am no expert but I am getting pretty good using the trial and error method.

I have plenty down here in Charleston so if you are in need I got you.

Dry soil will help but go easy on the peat moss as it well hold moisture.

So, the corm looked pretty good but a lot of the roots looked very, very bad. I put the corm in some dry soil after cutting off the dead roots. It was warm so I brought it outside last week. There was a downpour monsoon of rain night before last (of course) and then last night it went down to 28 F. I checked it today and the corm is mushy some and the remaining roots that weren't looking so dead now look dead. I'm trying to find a super dwarf now but I'm still very sad. I loved this tree.:(:(:(

You're going to need to stick with orinoco (tall & dwarf), namwah (tall & dwarf), blue java, basjoo, mekong giant to have much success. Most anything else will do good from April to October-ish up where you are but will die all the way back every year. You'll basically be working with pups every year on cavendish and others like that.

I will say that my black thai, praying hands and viente cohol also completely survived the winter, even this past weekends cruel and unusual punishment which really pissed me off.

for real, I really got pissed. so I appreciate the advice on species (?) or types of nanas to try. I ordered a super dwarf and one that allegedly has a shorter time period to flower. It started with a K and had another name? I rinsed the corm off of my dwarf cav and dissected it and it had brown areas and healthy areas, it also had 4-5 what looked like potential pups, most were rotted but one I cut off was quite larger than the rest and appeared to have some newer growth? anyway, I cleaned it with like, stainless steel dental tools and it was absent of brown so I put it in some potting mix and now I just have to force myself to leave it alone. I think the major thing that happened with my first one was when I brought it inside, I couldn't leave it alone. Watered too much and just couldn't stop inspecting it lol

That's kinda what happened, although in Oct, when I brought it in, It was happy until a few weeks after I overwatered it.

First pup (which I killed bc I didn't separate it with enough corm or any roots) I tried, but it broke off like that.
