Wow I think I want a banana farm now! What's the scoop on the baloy variety? I never heard of that one before.

Re: I went on a photo binge this evening
Thanks Nick, Great Pics.
You're very lucky to grow in an area without any leaf diseases. |

I have some sigatoka and cordana, but the dry cooler weather is keeping a lid on things. We haven't had much appreciable rain since early October. |

I can't leave green or brown leaves laying on the ground in the field, it would be disastrous. The Morado is beautiful, hopefully it stays under 20'. |

It's unfortunate you can't leave leaves on the ground, it is great weed control. |

In the tropics, the banana leaves act as a barrier on the soil surface limiting the oxygen, as the soil goes anaerobic the roots near the surface die. |

I'm really starting to like this variety from all the pictures you've been posting Nicolas; can you tell me some of its merits? Is it a faster bloomer etc? The bunch you posting on the blooming page looks a pretty decent size too from what I assume to be a first generation's harvest :D |
Re: I went on a photo binge this evening
Baloy is a relatively fast bloomer, I planted last July and it looks like I will harvest this July. It was by far the fastest of the group that I planted. It is the plant crop and it flowered in early March. I have another one or two at the shoreline farm that was planted in August. It has not flowered yet. It seems like it might be a real winner for greenhouses.

Re: I went on a photo binge this evening
It certainly sounds like a pretty good variety and eight months to blooming isn't bad at all; is your shoreline farm cooler tempwise than this one, or is there some other that you think is lengthening the time for the Baloy down there to bloom?
Also do you know what it tastes like? If it's a nice flavor and has all these nice growths patterns it's a winner for me. I'm wondering if I can get it to fruit even faster since I'm zone 11 :D |

Wow that's a tiny plant! I didn't realize it was that small; thanks for the size comparison. And nice tropical look on you too; looks ready to hit the beaches ;)
