Hello ,
Any body have any suggestions on how to support, tide Bananas? I think Bill may hit us . Miami Beach is my area ..I am very very worry my Kendria and Saba are probably close to a moth or two to fruit They are about 25+feet tall.. Forecast today: Forecasters expected it to hit Category 3, with winds of more than 110 mph by Wednesday. Category 3, 4 and 5 storms are considered "major" hurricanes, the most destructive kind. At 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) Bill was about 975 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and headed west-northwest at 16 mph, the hurricane center said. It was expected to curve more to the north as it nears Bermuda later in the week. Is Huge... [IMG] [/IMG] |

Something that strong may be indefensible. The best you can do is minimize the damage. You can cut down the outer 2/3, or even 3/4, of the leaves of all the plants. Also, you can reinforce the p-stems with three poles in a tripod fashion around them. You don't have to cut the leaves unless the storm is sure to hit your area and it's a several hours away.
The best one is that I pray you are not in the path. Stay safe! |

When Ivan and Katrina hit us (kinda like nuclear bombs, close still counts), I removed ALL of the foliage leaving just the pstems. This worked for me. others I saw that had nothing done to them were in twisted heaps on the ground.
I hope Bill doesn't end up in the gulf... Russell |

Ivan was devastating here. I don't think Bill is headed to the Gulf, but we still have a couple months to worry the next one! I hope Bill just does a loop in the Atlantic and dies!

Why do you think hurricane bill is going to hit Florida? Every single computer model has it heading east and to the north us! Has a higher probability of bothering NY than it does Florida!!!

when you have a 25ft banana plant there's nothing you can really do.I have had 10 footers get blown down with some strong squalls.I think we are in the CLEAR for now.

I'm hoping for the best for all of you in FL. We got Ike last year and we're keeping a close eye on the gulf.
I didn't really do anything to my bananas last year as Ike approached (just didn't have time). My 'Orinoco' was fruiting and had a bunch prop on it and it still failed. All of the leaves on my other bananas were just trashed with the exception of my potted M. laterita, which I was able to lay down behind the garage. It was unharmed completely. My M. siamensis (also potted) escaped most damage as it was protected due to the side of the house it was on. |

This was on our Pioneer Press this morning from the Miami AP
"It was too soon to tell if Hurricane Bill would threaten the eastern coast of the U.S., said John Cangialosi, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center. It was not expected to threaten Florida. " I hope they are correct and you and your Banana's will be safe. I want the Miami area to stay together, my niece is getting married there in February and I plan to be there to enjoy! ![]()

We all know that it takes only a few hours of wind to ruin a summer's worth of growth. That's why I remove all of the foliage when I know its coming. I've never lost a pstem this way. It cuts down on resistance and at least gives you something to start back from.

Stay safe guys - Ana and Bill have missed us for different reasons - but I know how worrying it can be not to know what is going to happen until the last moment (almost). We have our plans in place for the hurricane party on our local beach (700 metres away - less than half a mile) in case the occasion arises - in fact just firming them up today - wood for fire, rum, more rum, chairs, food, more rum, someone needs vodka, beer - why does booze feature so highly? The nanas will have to take their chances in case of a big storm - they will always grow again.

The history of the term 'hurricane party' has NOTHING to do with people, alcohol or partying. It was meant literally - before radio, TV and whatever else, hell, any form of word, a hurricane would suddenly appear, essentially like barging in on a party unannounced, and have its way etc...

Calming or numbing, what's the difference? To most people I know, booze makes them happy, too. Sometimes, too happy, in fact! Yeah, your definition is less somber. Makes for easier fellowship.
