Very interesting! You know how many times I’ve read about mats here on bananas.org! Now that totally makes sense! You know what’s funny I think I even looked it up once already! Evidently forgot what I already learned! Oh, boy!

Here’s an update! I did get a couple of my plants (notice how I didn’t call them trees this time) taller than me this time! So a couple are over 6 foot tall! Just so you know I’m not near 6’ tall!
![]() Yeah! So hopefully, next season they’ll get even taller than that! I’m very happy! Can’t you tell?!![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks again for the help from everybody on this thread!![]()

Good planting site preparation, soil amendments, sunlight, water, additional fertilizer and MULCH! I have my namwah patch heavily mulched, and constantly add layers of manure, kitchen scraps, leaves, grass.. you name it. With each new layer i put down more wood chips. I dont mulch right on the Pstem, but leave that area clear for a few inches to prevent rot. I also fertilize weekly with about a 1/2 cup of 13/13/13 per plant. I further add potassium sulphate every 2 weeks. I really feel that good soil, and tons of organic matter are the key.. sunlight and water cant do much without a good root system to uptake nutrients and moisture. Most of my namwah are 13ft of Pstem, all of that growth since March/April. I have many other varieties as well, but the namwah are planted in the best prepared bed in the yard. The others are about 6-8 feet at this point in the season.

![]() ![]() It’s a little disappointing to hear it could take that long for the plants to get really big and fruitful one day! Oh well, it should be fun to watch them grow big & tall! ![]()

I think you could be anywhere in the 9 a or b and grow like a madman/ or woman. Corm power is a beautiful thing. I have a saba that got blown over in august from a Hurricane and it has 4' of stem since growing thru what was its stem. I think 3 years for Tissues cultures maybe true except for Veinte Cohol. I know I can get it to fruit in 2 years. Corm Power enables a person to grow Monster plants faster than tissue culture plants that have basically very little Corm. I have 4 flowers this year with no fertilization. Its the Banana's of Corona. Hopefully El' Nino' comes around I have some awesome stands of SH-3640, and hopefully I'll be eating FHIA-02 next year. I have a monster Caligold that is over 7' of stem w/o a flower I'm sure it will have a big flower, but all for not.. so goes life. :^)

Love it! I can’t believe it that your Saba has made it thru a hurricane and yet has grown that big since then! Amazing! You know that’s what I thought only buy or grow corms and not tissue culture! I also can’t believe you didn’t fertilize and yet you have 4 flowers grown? I am shocked! Good for you! Very impressed! Thanks so much for your reply & info! One more thing yeah I wish I was in zone 8-10 but unfortunately I am only in zone 6A! Hopefully one day I will be living in a warmer climate! Fingers crossed!

I grew 2 plants from 6 inches tall to about 4-5 feet in a single summer. To add height I would keep the tree at 3 uppermost leaves, fertilize monthly, water daily, and the summer heat of 2020.
They stopped growing when the weather cooled down, and suckers/pups started to grow. So if you don't have issue, remove any pups and provide as much light (natural or artificial) to continue growing. |

If you want tall bananas, my guess is you start with the taller varieties. The tallest edible banana I am aware of would be the Saba - a starchy, less sweet, 'cooking' banana. The 2nd tallest would be the Apple banana - p-stem is about 20 ft, and makes a smallish slightly 'fruity' tasting banana.
Anyone have different info? |

This was my first time growing banana plants and it was exciting. To see a new leaf every week just blew my mind. My goal is to plant it outside in actual soil next spring. |

A planter that big and it had roots went all the way down the container? Amazing! You did a great job! I am genuinely impressed! All of this on your first attempt at growing banana plants? Mind blown! You should be very proud! Thanks for sharing your story to me! ![]()
