Occasionally, I have never figured out how Chiquita gets them to size up so big. My gran nain fruit is usually in the 5"-7" range while Chiquita's would be in the 6"-8+" range. The jamaicans and haitians use them green.

Green bananas (not plantains) are called guineos in Spanish.

Makes fantastic side dish called "guineos in escabeche". Served room temp.

Folks --- don't pass up making this dish. Cheap to make, simple ingredients. Green bananas can be found in any Latin grogery. Also if your supermarket gets them full green and doesn't put them on the floor untill yellow you can ask for green ones.

It's the magic that oil, vinegar and garlic does to food -- and sitting for 24 hours or so, that makes a simple dish like this great.

I have the same issue Nic, they usually never get as big as the "publix" market bananas.

I think I may try to trim the bunches down to 6 hands to see If I can get the fruit a little bigger. I've had some that looked pretty good and came close but just not quite there.

thanks very helpful info in this thread.. i thought mine were the only ones that didn't get that big..i have pics in my gallery. the two bunches i cut had close to 200 edible fruit but they were on the skinny side. a few yellowed .most of them were cooked green. thought the small fruit size was because im here in central Georgia. interesting to know you have the same issues in central and south Florida.

Isn't it just a matter of climate ? Better climate bigger bananas ?

Yeah, I imagine climate is part of it, but May-October in South Florida is just as warm and wet as the tropics. I'm missing something.

Nick ----- All that residual Nitrogen in your soil we talked about before you planted -- how about a current soil test of samples within the mat areas to check N depletion. And compare with samples of nearby unplanted areas.

How many hands are normal. Somewhere I bet someone has done a study on cutting hands and it's relation to maturing and size.
