Yes, the Dwarf Lady Finger, or any banana plant, will do well inside the house for the winter in a 70°F environment. If you are successful with Dwarf Cavendish, you should be able to grow any banana under similar conditions. But you will need to make sure that it gets sufficient light. Daily misting will help very much as well, though a humidifier would be better. Then when you put it out in the spring, it should take off with a good head start. Good luck to you, and welcome to the organization! |

Brian,
Outstanding! Can't wait to get my SH 3640, Belle, Logee's Ladyfinger, Manzano and Pisang Klotek in the ground. Waiting till the cold fronts blow over. Give me a holler - me and the dog will help you eat them there naners. Wife and Dad too!! Worrying now about the 4 in fruit right now -- Goldfinger with 120, Dwarf Namwah with 36, Dwarf Brazilian with 42 and Red Iholene with 27. The sporadic watering system I replaced, together with the cold, dealt them a cruel blow last winter/spring - woof! Dan Last edited by bananimal : 11-25-2008 at 02:16 AM. Reason: specify time frame |

Dar, where are you located? I haven't seen anyone else in the forum growing Namwah, only Dwarf Namwah. I've been trying to get a Tall Namwah pup to compare to one of my unknown varieties.

Hah! I got the Dwarf Namwah recently just so I can compare to the regular Namwah. To see if the dwarf one will produce better bunches for me. Sending you a pm now...

Brian, I know this is an old thread, but it seems like an appropriate place...
You've consistently grown and fruited many different varieties. For those of us deciding on which varieties we next need to plant (because apparently it is impossible to stop acquiring new plants), how would you rank that flavors of the ones you've grown? I know taste is personal and subjective, but I'd love to hear your personal and subjective opinions! Thanks, Mark |

Mark,
So far out of the 30+ varieties I've grown, my favorite ones are sweet/sub-acid bananas! Manzano, Golden Pillow, Chini Champa, Mysore. I have a few more varieties growing that are reported as sweet/sub-acid, but haven't fruited yet. Second on the taste list for me would be just good and sweet bananas like- D.Namwah, and Belle. I am also growing others that are reported as sweet with good flavor but have not fruited them yet! For just a standard, large fruited banana, it's hard to beat SH-3640. I like everything about it! There are many other good varieties that I have grown and gotten rid of due to characteristics that I didn't care for- too tall, pup too much, too long to ripen, etc... When I first started growing bananas, the quest was to find one that tasted like bananas my Grandfather grew. Still haven't found that one yet! Hope that helps!

Thanks Brian, that is very helpful information, especially since it looks like we have very similar tastes -- I'd say my two favorites so far are Misi Liku and Manzano. But aside from the Cavendish varieties (which aren't bad, just boring at this point), I've liked most of the ones I've tried. Thanks to Tony and Jon for giving me fruit to try.
