first bunch of 2013

went to my local greenhouse today. they have a mat of neglected , what I think are dwarf cav., in the back that have busted there pots and grown in the ground. no one takes care of them and ther behind 1000 boston ferns so very neglected. I took interest in them and started throwin a bit of fertalizer on them when I went..about a month ago I see a bloom..I went back today and this was waiting on me... not my banana's really but since no one seems to know they are back there I'll be happy to take a taste of the fruit.

Your case is a little bit similar to mine: the first bananas i ever harvested weren't mine and i never had a taste !
My job was to take care of a garden during three months, the owner weren't there at the time. It was my first time gardening in a subtropical climate and i was very excited, especialy when i discovered the banana mat !
Unfortunately the harvest came the last week of my contract, before the owner's return, so i hanged the green bananas in the kitchen and left, it wasn't my bananas after all.
I never expected that a single harvest could be so heavy ! The variety was Shima banana, an okinawan strain.

there are some that have fruited before at around 4 ft but the bunch was sparse and the nanas I ate were only a inch or 2 long. very sweet and wonderful but it would take 100 to make a meal. hope these turn out better.

and no one there is fascinated by the banana flower and fruiting in the greenhouse in that cold zone? They must not really be into plants or something...

its a small local greenhouse..the rent out palm trees for proms and things like that. these have been back there 2 years at least and forgotten about. the mekong they have are labeled "banana hardy" its not really a tropical greenhouse. I sure was amazed by it. a bunch that big in a 6B even indoors is impressive.
