First budding of my nanas
 

After planting my first nana plants last April I just noticed my first flower bud about a week ago. Not completely sure of the variety since I mixed them up during planting but it's likely Pisang Ceylon or possibly Hua Mua.

Generally how much longer from this stage till ready to pick?

Looks more Hua Moa than Mysore for sure! Where did you get the plants from? Always good to know where to find correctly labeled plants! Congrats!

I haven’t filled a bunch of either yet but i would guess between 3-5 months from this stage in south FL. I would suggest to cut all (or most) nitrogen and give only potassium from this stage on. It will help fill them.

It'd be nice if they're the Hua Mua. We love fried Plantians and those are my fav.

I've been feeding them with Fruit Fuel soluble fertilizer monthly. I bought this fert through a member here. It's heavy on the Potassium.

I suspect the other large nana to the right is the Pisang Ceylon which shouldn't be far behind in budding. That leaves the short one to be the Apple variety I guess. These were all ordered and planted together.

This is where it's at just a few days later. The speed of growth is just amazing to me.

I just gave them their monthly feeding of Fruit Fuel.



And to add to this I've been enjoying the delicious Papayas my trees have been providing and just saw signs that my first Pineapple is on it's way.

After the first few hands of bananas have developed well, the rest of them seem to be dropping off. Is this normal? Any reason why? Cooler weather maybe?

Those dropping off are the male flowers. Totally normal. Nice bunch too!

Oh, so there are flowers of both sexes and the males drop off. Good to know.

The sterile male flowers come after the female flowers/bananas. They either dry up and stay on the bunch or they drop off. It depends on the variety. Like Raja Puri you will notice all the dried up dead male flowers left behind. The male flowers are usually sterile on edible/seedless types.

How tall was the Hua Moa when it flowered? About 10’ or so?
Keep posting pics! You don’t see many Hua Moa bunches. Such a good plantain! They are amazing to eat over-ripe as a sweet plantain also! I was on track for a bunch this year, but our horriable winter decided to happen! I don’t have a single unprotected pstem standing!

Yeah, the p-stem was about 10'.

The male flowers mostly drop of on this plant.

I love plantains either fried green (tostones) or over ripe (maduros). I Can't wait.

Update on my nana progress.

No more new fruit producing. Should I cut the flower? If so, where?




The tall nana plant next to it also flowered. My first guess it's Pisang Ceylon, otherwise it's Manzana (Apple).

I normally just pop it off with my hand. I would break it off right where it is at! Where the male bud connects to the peduncle.

Looks like it’s hardly even producing new male flowers. On this bunch, at its current stage I would leave it! We could see how it looks in future pictures and it doesn’t look like it’s wasting hardly any energy.

The bottom plant looks more Mysore than Manzano to me. You will know in a week or 2. Great bunches! Was this one planted around April also?

Thanks for the tip. I'll leave the bud alone.
How do you normally know when and if you should remove the bud? For next time.

All three plants were planted at same time in April, were from the same seller, and of the same age (size).

Here's a better image of the current plants.
The only one that has yet to fruit is the short one which by deduction might likely be the Manzano. It's either a slow grower or a dwarf.





Each plant has 1 pup, and I work to keep it that way.

Also, I agree with my bro Ty, the bottom plant looks more Mysore than Manzano!....


I usually let 1 to 2 male flower rows to come out first, then I cut/remove the bud.....

So the 2nd plants new bud has stared producing initial fruit/flowers. What do they look more like, Mysore or Manzano or still too early?

Yes!....First, female flowers will appear, in which they are the banana fruits, then the flower bud will start opening rows of male flowers!....Most of the time, once you start getting male flowers, you won’t get any female flowers (banana fruits) again!.....

Man that 2nd bunch looks a lot like Hua Moa also. Are they about the same height? It’s not a Mysore for sure. It’s not a manzano either. I think you have 2 Hua Moa bunches! Congrats!??

Now it’s looking more like the Greenearth we know!

What's a good source for nana plants? I'd like a Pisang Ceylon.

As far as the shortie of my 3 plants. I guess it's still a mystery. I have no idea when it'll flower.
