Finally Planted My Bananas

After keeping my hardy bananas in pots in the Carolina room all winter, I finally put them in the ground! These are my first bananas. We got them at the Bamboo Farm Fall Banana Festival in Savannah last fall. They are Sweet Heart, Kumanaba, Blue Torres and Ice Cream. You can see that the largest mother died, but it put out a really nice pup.

Re: Finally Planted My Bananas

After planting in early April, my bananas are growing nicely. The Ice Cream (main plant) died, but sent out 2 pups - thank goodness. Yesterday, I fertilized with black cow manure, leaf compost, fire pit ashes, and blood meal. Today, a new leaf shot up about 18". I hope I did not overdo it. They look good, but I don't have any experience to back me up.

When should I expect the first flower, banana harvest, etc.?

What fun!:woohoonaner:

Congratulations,:bananas_b
Your bananas look great! I've purchased several bananas from the Bamboo garden's fall festival - their banana patch inspires me to try different varieties. Here in Savannah, I usually get flowers the second year after I plant them in the ground. The veinte cohol's will flower and fruit the same year if they start out the size of yours.
If they do flower this year, it will likely be too late for the fruit to develop. I'm hoping for a mild winter this year and a bumper crop of bananas for all of us next year.

Re: Finally Planted My Bananas

Thank you for the information SR. I think I can wait one more year for a bloom and fruit. I too hope for a mild winter. We certainly had a killer this past year.

I was going to add some new photos, taken yesterday, but I can only get them into the member gallery. I can't remember how to add them to the post.

Happy Gardening

p.s. We are on St. Helena Island. Danny and I moved from TN a couple of years ago. What a pleasure to grow bananas, azaleas and camellias + all kinds of gingers, etc.

Re: Finally Planted My Bananas

They either will or will die. I fed them with lots of leaf mulch, black cow, blood meal, fish meal and a tad of Epsom salts. Crossing my fingers that I did not overdo it. I don't think you can with the natural ingredients?
