Re: dormant banana issue
I think they may be too warm. Here is my situation: Even though we have had a very warm winter so far here in Bergen-Norway we are still far north wet, and cold! My musa basjoo, sikkimensis, and helens hybrids have refused to go dormant in the ground outside. They have pushed up through the protection! And we are in the range of 32-50 degrees F.
To keep a banana dormant it seems you have to stay below 50 degrees, and it probably matters wich type. I think orinoco, rajapuri, basjoo, sikkimensis, and balbisiana are typical species that can grow even below 50 degrees. Other bananas such as Cavendish types seem to need higher than 50 degrees to start growing. |
Re: dormant banana issue
i agree with you but that is why im confused because the orinoco is the one that actually looks dormant, the williams is the one that refuses to go in to dormancy :)

Re: dormant banana issue
:nanawhopp: zergas, reading your postI decided to check on mine. I stored two basjoos out of the pot and dormant. kept them in the dark at about 60 degrees. when I checked them this morning, the stems were almost completely withered away. I panicked (being a novice) and potted them up an watered them. I think if I left them the way they were, I would have nothing by spring. Maybe your doing the right thing.

Re: dormant banana issue
I'm starting to get worried about my plants also. Our temps have been around 70f for several days. I can't find any place cooler than that. The temp at the level of the corms is around 60f also. The plants won't fit in the extra fridge w/out being cut, and I'd have to fight with the boys b/c thats where they store their kegs.
Should I mist the corms a little? I'm really not sure what to do. nucci60, I don't have your courage. I haven't brought myself to lift the tarp! Any ideas on what to do here? |
Re: dormant banana issue
BTW. Zergas beautiful plants!

Re: dormant banana issue
:djnana2: maybe I kept mine too warm. In the northeast it is hard to find 40-50 degrees in winter. basements are usually warmer than that because of the heating systems. garages get too cold. attics get cold, but can heat up on sunny days so the temp. is never constant. whats a boy to do? LOL. I am sure my corms are still fine, but those pseudostems looked like dead cornstalks. this spring they aregoing in the ground with the other two.
