Dogs

Besides taking a bamboo cane across your dogs ass, how do you keep your dog from bothering your nanners? She chewed half way through my Saba pup today !

I had the same problem. My dogs love the small banana pups. They step on the baby bananas, grab the young banana plants and shake and shred them. I had to put up a fence and separate them. :nanadrink:

Try putting three or four mothballs around each plant, especially close to pups. I use mothballs around all my bananas and flower beds. Works for squirrels and rabbits. My dog gives them a wide birth also. No effect on plants. Good luck!

What I do not know is if mothballs derived components will end up in the bananas.

Older mothballs consisted primarily of naphthalene, but due to naphthalene's flammability, many modern mothball formulations instead use 1,4-dichlorobenzene, which may be somewhat less flammable. The latter chemical is also variously labeled as para-dichlorobenzene, p-dichlorobenzene, pDCB, or PDB, making it harder to identify unless all these synonyms are known to a potential purchaser. Both of these ingredients have the strong, pungent, sickly-sweet odor often associated with mothballs. Both naphthalene and 1,4-dichlorobenzene undergo sublimation, meaning that they evaporate from a solid state directly into a gas; this gas is toxic to moths and moth larvae.

Naphthalene and 1,4-dichlorobenzene should not be mixed, as they react chemically to produce a liquid which may cause damage to items being preserved.[1]

Due to the health risks of 1,4-dichlorobenzene, and flammability of naphthalene, other substances like camphor are sometimes used (though camphor has its own toxicity issues).

Re: Dogs

I have also put the large tomato cages around the really small pups. It helps. It will stop the accidental tromping from the kids and dogs.

Fencing them off or caging them is probably your best bet. Be careful with mothballs as they are toxic if your dog eats them! Good luck!

I agree, NEVER use mothballs in a garden as they are toxic. A small decorative fence would work great and look good, unless "said dog is a Great Dane" and could stepped right over a fence LOL

Agree, mothballs are much too toxic to be used. The other day my neighbours used this thing and got lots of troubles with domestic animals. Better use repellers, my opinon :03:

Use a fence! My Ducks a few years ago would eat through the pstems (the BIG ones) and topple them over. .... However, a few weeks ago a neighborhood dog was chasing my chickens (& in the past Dogs has killed them ($2000 worth); he committed suicide by running in front of my 30-30. Sad, no one knows where the dog disappeared to. ..... So don't ???? with my chickens or Nanas .....

LOL...I sholdn't laugh but your way of putting it is humorous. Livestock owners are allowed to protect their livestock!! Its just unfortunate the real culprit wasn't held accountable....the owner. I am of the opinion there are very few, if any, bad dogs, just bad owners.

Back to the subject, I too have to fence my plants that reside outside of my deer fence because of my geese. They will pull apart a mature p-stem, strip by strip until nothing is left. Darn birds!!

Agreed!!!! .... I tried the owner route .... the county even has 'bad dog's ordinance but nothing happened. So one night I met with the County Commissioners and told them the situation and I would be using my gun first and calling the Sheriff's Dept. second; and the owner of the dogs was one of their own Animal Control Officers. ..... The kill was reported and documented by Animal Control 2 weeks ago. The dog killed was owned by another neighbor.

Re: Dogs

Sorry you had to deal with that, I do know how it feels to have animals killed by someone's dog and it sucks....I was very fortunate in that in my instance the owner came forward, a few days after the fact, and accepted responsibility. Sounds like you did everything right!! Some people really should not have animals!!
