Canadian Members, good banana sources in Canada?
I've had several people call or e-mail me from Canada recently looking to purchase banana plants. I don't have all the info/permits/or even time to find out what it takes to ship there, but there surely are some sources you Canadian members have received bananas from.
Maybe you can post some sources here in this thread where you were able to receive banana plants from? I've been referring people to bananas.org, but maybe they can't find the information they need. I feel sorry for people not being able to find the kinds of plants they want. It's so frustrating!!! |
Re: Canadian Members, good banana sources in Canada?
you can find a few places in BC, most people I read bought from Bamboo world I'm not sure if they still sell them last time I checked they did. also at zellers in the Garden section during summer, Homedepot, and lows occasionally.it varies which part of the country you are in.
while in bc the types found were mostly ornamental, musa lasiocarpa, blood and basjoo you will not find any any edibles here, except sdc from what I have experienced. Not easy at all finding plants here, living here honestly sucks let me tell all of you. on e-bay unlesss it comes from china or asia Very rarely will people ship to Canada. and banana plants can not be purchased anywhere on ebay. |

Re: Canadian Members, good banana sources in Canada?
There are a few places that have told me to call back in a month or so and They could see what they could do about a special order with there own suppliers .Rice road in st cathrines(or welland) sounds the most promising. They carried a few tropical varieties last summer but I was to late.
Hardy Tropicals | Rice Road Greenhouses and Garden Centre I have managed to start a few varieties from seed and I am paying to overwinter them at a greenhouse till they get to a good size to overwinter bareroot. The only bananas I have seen in the london and area are basjoos, ensetes ,sdc's,truly tiny etc. |

clearly identified on the attached tag, complete with hardiness indication etc. and has not disappointed. It is now a healthy plant, doing its second winter (See: http://www.bananas.org/f2/my-banana-...ack-12904.html) I have since seen banana plants as centre pieces in potted arrangements sold in "The Great Canadian Superstore". I doubt, that many of the buyers were even aware, that the big leaved plant was actually a banana and probably tossed the whole thing out in late fall. I also saw individual bananas displayed in the local (Penticton) Art Knapp's Garden Centre, - again not labeled as to the species. These plants usually show up in May, maybe late April, about the same time as tomatoes. Looking for Canadian sources appears to be a wise choice. I ordered a Siam Ruby from the states in late 2010 from the states, but it took 3 weeks to get here, - probably due to customs delay. It arrived in deplorable shape and after some initial sign of life died on me. Good luck! Olaf |
Re: Canadian Members, good banana sources in Canada?
i bought bananas from rice road nurseries as well
other sources can be: big box stores, grocery stores(where i got my first banana for $4), convenience stores... who usually get their plants from... the ontario food terminal(here in ontario at least), another good source. there are more too... lets hear about em! or maybe try to maintain a list with locations and varieties available |
