We do have the clay soil and I pretty much do a combination of both methods, dig a hole as deep as possible, add Gypsum to loosen up the clay, too. Never thought of using coarse sand for the banana plants.

I guess you won't be low on Calcium any time soon doing that. :^)

Looks great! One thing potentially to add is planting hardy bananas in places with a cold winter. I dig a large hole and supplement with materials to aid in the drainage. I then bury the plant much deeper than I would with a nanner I would be digging back up. This helps protect the corm in long cold winters like this one. Thanks for the pics.
