Banana nectar?
 

just curious when we were kids we would pull the centre out of honey suckle vine flowers and get a tiny dop of nectar that was really sweet today I was looking at my flowering rajah puri and saw large drops of clear liquid in the individual blossoms an eight of an in in dia or bigger brought the honeysuckle nectar to mind and just had to taste it .Very sweet with a slight musty flavour but good of course it helps that the plant is in a six ft deep pit and the blooms are at knee level to me . Just wonder if any one else has tried this? and if it is common to all bananas or just rajah puri?

Most of mine do it and I stand on a ladder and gather what I can in a tiny bowl then I consume.

I have not tried it yet, but all the hummingbirds and orioles absolutely love it.
Some people cut the flower off, but I rather get some extra enjoyment by watching the birds going for the nectar.

I love it! I'm out there all the time fighting wasps and bees for it! It tastes about the same on different varieties to me.

The only one that I've flowered and doesn't produce it is the velutinas! They have a more dry pollen powder type stuff in their flowers.

Buzz like a bee and get all you can! It will be winter soon! Lol.

You didn't get any bananas from the velutinas? How is that possible? Did they just not plump up?

Orinoco is great! Sweet! However do not taste the fluid (sap) from the p-stem. Very nasty. I had heard that you can hollow out a stem to collect water to drink in a survival situation. Having tasted this I believe it would come up as fast as it went down provided you could swallow it!

I saw in a video that some people take the center out of the PS and use it in salads and other cooked dishes as well. Tasted it once, kinda like raw artichoke heart.

I was talking about velutina doesn't produce an actual liquid nectar! It's flower makes a powder on and around the flowers. I would get lots and lots of velutina bananas.

I only have 1 velutina now! I used to have a lot of them!

Oh OK! Well I have a couple Velutina plants that are about 1.5 ft high. Can't wait for them to fruit for me for the first time.

I tasted this nectar this morning from my Dwarf Orinico. Like slightly boiled maple syrup. Yumm
