1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
I was thinking might be slow shipping, but they went USPS Priority which means 2-3 days. So they could be here tomorrow
2 Dwarf, Basjoo, Ice cream: Shipped in pots about 5-8 or 10" tall, 3" pot I did a search on transplant & came up with 6 pages I read thru a lot by I'm still uncertain on transplanting My plan at present: Initially allow them to recover from shipping No direct sun - water as needed Wait 5 days & allow them to recover & start growing 1st transplant - to what size pot? Is it better to put them in a big pot right off the bat? IE instead of say a 7" pot, then later to a bigger pot? Do they like being in a smaller pot when they are smaller I have a few pots that are 15" across & about a foot tall I have MG potting soil - not organic These will be planted outside, probably in pots the 1st year Then brought into the greenhouse or garage for the winter My 1st year with the greenhouse, not sure how warm it will stay out there |
Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
I don't like tp pot up to a pot more than 2" bigger as sometimes the extra soil allows too much moisture for the small root system and they rot.

Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
I would try to get the bassjoos in the ground. They seem to like that better. Nice selection of plants but your missing out on the ensete maurelli!!!! they have been selling cheap on internet. For northern growers you’ll have better luck in smaller pots. Then you can over water, with out to much damage....put them in the ground for max growth thou.. Good luck to ya & let the growing season begin!

I agree with Saltydad. Don't be in a hurry to get them in the ground or in full sun.Let them grow some first. |
Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
Now I have to figure out where to put them
I'm just working on cleaning up the pool area I need to setup the solar water heater & fill the pool It's going to be 80 the next 2 days Good time to get it filled & going Ideally I want these around the pool for looks But not too close that someone will grab onto one or chlorine will splash on it from the pool |
Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
Take a look at Randy4ut's photos for a real nice pool planting. There are also others who have done a real nice job; check out the early Member's Backyards thread too.

Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
One of my problems is the pool "deck" is concrete & surrounded by fence. There are gardens on the other side of the fence that I may be bale to take over. Two corners near the house are somewhat open - but I'm not sure how close to the fence I can go
The side of the pool furthest from the house I just expanded out (last year) & have plenty of room. Still "untamed" so far I guess I'll see how it works out |
Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
I have enough kitty litter buckets & other containers for now
Once they get bigger I'll need to buy some big containers Wife will be happy to see me use the buckets for "something" I started saving them a while ago - thinking for tomatoes |

Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
It's supposed to be 90 today, 80+ tomorrow
We have had a new mailman too, he gets here later in the day now The old mailman used to get here around 1-2pm |
Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
Hope your mailman made it with the plants today. Speaking of kitty litter buckets; we had a bunch of those, also, until we switched to a brand that comes in bags. However, other things come in those type buckets, also. I once had a cutomer, a baker, who wanted a certain plant. I had the plant, but not here. I said that I would bring it up from the farm, and he asked me if I could just bring it to the bakery. When I got there, he had these buckets sitting there. He got eggs in them; some had labels that said Whole Eggs, some were Egg Yolks, and some were Egg Whites. He asked me if I could use some of them to grow in. I really didn't want to use them for growing, but thought I could store fertilizer, etc. in them. When we were talking, he told some of his help to put them in my van. When I was ready to leave, I found the truck was full. There were approx. a thousand of them in there!

Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
Well, not the greatest pic
The pots are much smaller then I thought they would be So I'll look thru what I have for larger pots I'll need to take a better pic too without all the other veggie plants in the pic I actually started to pull the brown bags off Then I realized the ID was written on the bag ![]() |

Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
Hey dave, did you get them throu "wellspring" or someone else? they look nice...
|
Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
Yes, they were thry Wellspring
They are looking good today The Ice cream looks a little off, but not too bad I spent the day in the garden building a support for my tomatoes They grow 8'+ tall so I put in PT 4x4's & the (steel?) poles from some old chain link fence. Then I added cross poles to make a lattice like structure. They are between 6' & 7' off the ground That should do it It's been on my "To do" list for 2 years Ever since the 1st year I planted in this area & they went over 6' tall |
Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
I also got a banana from Wellspring on Thursday. And frank to say that their plants looks a little weak, that is what they look like. And mines has some weird brown spots on them. But that is not to say that is bad. I ordered from them a very long time ago a mazano and it was quite as puny too, but it shot up high (forgot the exact height but it was a few feet taller than me) by the end of the year. So I have good faith in these puny-looking TC plants.
Btw, florida-breeze tc banana I received earlier this month is a bit more bigger and a few dollars cheaper, but their selection is less. |
Re: 1st bananas arriving Thurs or Friday
Mine did the same, I put them in the shade to hard them off 1st week then planted them in the ground. I don’t babyem to much.. We don’t have to worry so much living in cooler zone.(other than wind burn & nothin a five gallon bucket can't fix!)
You should try that method with your cucumbers you would be surprized...(talking about growing cucumbers on a fence) |
