check out my gallery for a pic of a musa species in the wilds of northern vietnam. its not alot to go on, but the large upright flower stalk was quite unique. the species mostly ranged from 18-24 ft. any ideas?

Hayes- I don't know which it is, but I bet Gabe does. Any more pics of that trip? BTW, I finally go to meet Alan Galloway at the Amorphophallus talk at PDN last weekend.

I would say definetly something in the Musa splendida group, either that species or something closely related. There are a few different similar plants that are being discovered and may someday be classified into thier own distinct sub-group.

I did a little reading, and found that it may be musa paracoccinea. Check the link, and see if the description matches. I can't translate the top part, but I think that I could make out that the inflorescence of musa splendida is pendulous (inlorescencia pendula). It's written in French. The bottom part of the description states that musa paracoccinea has a stiff, upright inflorescence, unlike musa splendida. It is also native to northern Vietnam.

Did you get one, Hayes?? :08:

Musa splendida has an upright infloresence, it is not pendulous. Musa paracoccinea and Musa splendida are in the same group of bananas, it suppose it could be Musa paracoccinea, but my main guess what that it is in that group.

Do you have access to that species?
I have ben looking for an unusual "upright inflorescence/bunch" banana plant for a while, besides "pink" and "laterita" bananas.

Thanks,
Carlos

I have access to about 95% of the known Musa varieties and species in the world, the problem is that I cannot just go out and sell them once I get them, eventually I can get them into the trade but it takes a few years.
