Some cultivated Ensete superbums at Farm Chokchai, Thailand

This is a superbly-run beef-cattle and dairy farm in Thailand known as Farm Chokchai. Needless to say, the Ensete superbums here peaked my interest more than the cattle!

A whole fence-row of Ensete superbum, but I didn't get a picture of all of them.

I have more from Farm Chokchai later on!

That's awesome! What were you in Thailand for? Bring anything back?

Nate, it was a student exchange, study abroad, agricultural tour with my university (UT) and Thailand's premier agricultural university, Kasetsart U. We were there for 3 weeks, and it was great! I did bring some things back, including some Thai Ensete superbum seeds.

Why is it that the things I want to grow always grow better where I am not? Beautiful bananas!

Thanks for the great pics Frank! Those are beautiful plants. I see no pups - are they only propagated by seed? So it was ensete superbum I saw up in the hills here. Pics as soon as I can get the keys to the jeep and get up there - maybe this pm.

Ensetes are normally produced by seeds unless you want to do something "drastic"!

that drastic is cutting the stem down to the soil and then you have a change (sometimes it goes wrong) that all new pups are pupping out of the corm, right?

picture from 'Kristof' ( from a dutch forum board)

that happens when you cut the stem down to the ground
lots of new pups!

Excellent pics Frank.

I have only ever succeeded with getting Ensete Maurelii to pup with the chopping method to get pups. All the green types I have done have not worked :(

I am currently trying a Glaucum ( again ) at the moment.

Frank, Did you see any Variegated Bananas out there?

I am still trying with two of the green Ensete ventricosum. I've seen a few weak sprouts, but they brown out and die almost immediately. I covered the corm with more medium, thinking that maybe it was exposed to sunlight too quickly.

From what I've read, this method only works with E. ventricosum.

I did see one variegated banana. I think it was an 'AeAe', and it was planted in the ground at a nursery. I have a picture somewhere, I'll try to get it uploaded and posted soon.

Greats shots. That's cool that they are being cultivated over there too. Did it look like they were self seeding flowers/fruit, or pollinated.

Kyle, not sure about that. There were two in bloom at the same time there, and both had what looked like bananas full of seeds (in the picture you can see them). I think most Ensete have hermaphrodite flowers, so they don't need another flower for pollination, but I'd have to look that up for E. superbum.
