The ripe fruits of Musa Basjoo and its seeds

There are so many who grow Basjoo, but not so many who have harvested and tasted the fruits.
But one of my banana friends has done it by himself.

Here are some pics telling the truth.

Hi thank you all for your comments.

You have probablly clicked all the concerning pics of his subject which I foot-
noted thereunder for your better understanding.

I noticed in other posts that the germination ratio of Basjoo is very very low.
My friend says that is because the seeds are not sown as soon as they are
seperated from the fresh. So so called "sold seeds" germinate very very little.
I think this is why they have a complain about the germination ratio.

As for the question of fruiting time of Bajoo, it is the same as other Musas,
i.e. 30~40 leaves' time.

Natural pollination is very difficult, so manual pollination is necessary.

Hi,

I plan to grow Musa basjoo in Brazil and have purchased a yard in Brazil recently. I try to fruit basjoos for the seed business and cross experiments with fruit bananas. One triploid basjoo will bear seedless fruits, they mike look like the fruits of Super Dwarf Cavendish.

Some years ago I got fruits, which are still not completely ripen, but the seeds were ripen. I sown it out and one even germinated! Now is the plant 2 years old and overwinters in my greenhouse now.

Best wishes
Basjoofriend

Wow, I grow those and I never new that they would produce seeds in them. Will those seeds be able to grow new trees?

No just kidding with the pic.

The seeds are indeed said to be hard enough to chip teeth, though.

Re: The ripe fruits of Musa Basjoo and its seeds

Hi,

in 2011 I gave Helton one pup from my basjoo in Brazil. Now he informed that it has already flowered and is now setting fruits. But the seeds will not result pure basjoos, because the basjoo is pollinated by other banana species, Musa itinerans, Musa yunnanensis, Musa balbisiana, Musa sikkimensis Manipur and Musa thomsonii, even by fruit cultivars like Figo, Mysore and other. The seeds are open pollinated by other banana species in the nursery.

I told Helton that he may not sell the seeds, he should sow them out to get plants and to select the plants, because the plants are hybrids. Perhaps some of the basjoo seedlings might be the new hardy fruit bananas, perhaps some are parthenocarpic.

Best wishes
Joachim
