Musa laterita setting bloom !!!
Just noticed today that my potted M. laterita that I got last summer has set a bloom on one of the 5 pstems. It is in my den in front of a set of french doors and the pstems range in height from 1-3'. Should be an awesome potted nanner this coming summer...
Sorry but I was just surprised to see one this time of year... ![]() Last edited by Randy4ut : 01-20-2008 at 02:23 PM. Reason: typo |

Congrats, my friend! How exciting. Not many folks have a blooming banana indoors. I'll know you'll enjoy it when it's so cold outside. Send me a pic when you get a chance.

Ron,
With this bloom, the secret has to be neglect!!! LOL Honestly, I was got totally off guard with it. Nice little surprise, though, considering I probably will not reach 32F today and back down to about 15F again tonight!!! Maybe it will help boost me along until spring... Need little boosts this time of year for me!!! Take care... |

The location is where it stays, I just rotated the pot to get a better shot of the bloom. Sam, I only water it once every 4 weeks or so. Compared to what you do with yours, I DO negelect mine...

Congrats on the bloom, Randy! M. laterita is one of my favorites simply because they do flower easily (not to slight what you've accomplished). I remember I brought my plant with me from St. Louis (where it had never flowered) to Houston where it was in bud within 2 wks. of moving here. I'm sure it would have blommed in St. Louis had I stayed there. They are most impressive when several stalks bloom at once. I had about 6 at once last yr!

Does anyone know how cold hardy this banana is?

Austin, I will be interested to see what your responses will be. I have been told that they should be about as hardy as the M. ornatas. Hopefully, I will have enough success with this one this summer that I can do some testing on it myself come next winter...

I have some Laterita seeds I collected this fall. They're in damp peat moss, dim light, room temp. Should I do anything different to increase M. Laterita germination success?? Do they germinate easily?
I know I should post this in the germination forum, but since we're talking... Help. Thanks! |

Haven't tried it here yet, but Hayes in Anniston has. He says it won't come back for him there, and he's in zone 8a. It is a variable species though, and there could be other provenances that have more cold-hardiness.
As far as germination success...none here! I have had 100 seeds in the propagator for 8 months now with nothing yet. |
