Has anyone grown this banana and if so do you have any pictures of it please?

I have seen a picture of one but it looks like a normal Zebrina. I would like to know if they are Mottled with burgundy and green markings please.

Just saw one on E-bay. Looks like zebrina or Rojo to me as well.

True M. gracilis does not have the leaves like M. acuminata that are depicted in at least one photo I have seen.

Thanks Guys it was the one on ebay I saw. i will not be bidding anyway as its one of our members who is trying to buy it.

If you ever come across M. ʻLeyte Whiteʻ, if it is what its supposed to be and not mislabled, this is likely a hybrid of M. gracilis and M. violascens (which are very closely related species), and has flowers very similar to M. gracilis and M. violascens.

I saw it too and the photo doesn't ring true to me. none of the descriptions i can find (DRC, etc.) refer to the red variegation shown in his photo.

I have seen one time a real picutre of a musa Gracilis, and the flowers are like Leyte White , and that sort looks a little bit like Milky way..

That picture from sunshine is definetly not M. gracilis, it looks to be an ornamental hybrid of some sort with chromosome number 2n=22 (Eumusa and Rhodochlamys), definitely not a Callimusa as true M. gracilis is.

The picture in the wiki is accurate.

Thanks Ryan. I have only ever seen the picture in the stokes tropicals book listed as Leyte White.

nope. no seeds at all as mine are too young. i'll visit my friends big clump (the one in the pic) soon and hunt for seeds... these musa dont like strong sun and get burnt. the like it shaded and growing at the edge of water.

Stokes have them down as being around 5-10ft tall so they would make a good container plant. The leaves in the first picture show hardly any signs of shredding so that must be a well protected bunch.

I was just wondering about the status of this beautiful banana in cultivation. Anyone grows it?

Mine recently sent out a couple of babies and I've put the largest one on Ebay for auction! I remembered some of u guys were interested in this one!

wow, it looks much nicer than i expected! i thought the flowers were completly white.
can you post more pics of this musa and how does it grow in colder areas , with temperaturs of 20 degrees at day?
I have the milky way, it looks a bit like leyte white and im happy that i have the milky way:)

Yep. Its very rare. I think I'm one of the only people here in Asia, and the only one in Singapore, that has it in cultivation.

I almost lost it when it first came. Its slow to start, but once it picks up, it grows quickly and throws out pups.

Just joined ebay so i only have a feedback of 1. wanted to get rid of garden surplus and make some space, together with some aroids, and new spp, unidentified Zingiberales in my other listings. Don't worry, I've been sending and receiving plants from around the world as a hobby for years.........

I have tried ornata white 2 times. Never did get it to grow.... all died.

Not to worry, i'll put up the other pups for bidding as well as they get bigger so its fair game:nanadrink: I've got more Zingiberales up for auction this weekend. Perhaps I should put up some of my banana books as well?

It's this kind of plant that really should be up on auction... and yes, i know my price is shamefully low... hahaha... didnt think anyone would be interested. Perhaps u'd be the first on mainland USA to have it?

I'll put up some new species Thai/Vietnam and Palawan bananas in maybe a month's time. But these won't be cheap as i've paid a couple of arms and legs for these type locality specimens. All have ornamental/horticultural value, not fruiting. Stay tuned. :)

does anyone know of any agricultural regulations in the USA pertaining Musa importation? Can a fruit crop genus be imported?

What i usually do is to get a phytosanitary cert issued and plants inspected by a plant health inspector - without any treatment at USD15.

Any idea? Works fine with bromeliads though.... These will be my first Musa's out!

Yes, the phytosanitary certificate is mandatory, as is that the pseudobulb be cleaned, and no soil whatsoever.

Attached is a pamphlet from the USDA on APHIS Inspection Stations which gives the requirements for importation of plant materials into the USA. I posted this before, but the requirements therein are so simple but essential that they cannot be overemphasized.

I've received many plant materials from Thailand, Belize, the Philippines, etc., and except for my personally bringing them in as luggage, they have never been inspected, fortunately or unfortunately, whichever way you want to look at it. Mailed plants from Thailand with Phyto cert are not even opened. Ditto with seeds with no phyto cert. If the exporters followed proper protocol, all these plant materials will have to be addressed to the APHIS station nearest the recipient, with the recipients address inside the package, to which the APHIS station will forward the package after inspection. None of my received packages bore my Import Permit number nor the APHIS address that I sent them to send the package to.

So, depending on your sense of risk taking, and/or that of your customer, you can just send the package with a phyto cert and mail it directly to your buyer.

Thanks for the advice chong, that's what I've been doing all this while, ie doing a phyto and mailing directly to the buyer.

Was just worried whether the plants have to be dipped in some disinfectant in my country first, or whether the genus musa can enter USA. guess i'll just get a basic phyto cert and they'll be on their way.

Well, I bought it, so it should be here in a few weeks, right Ryan?
What do the experts think should be done with it? Keep it dormant until spring? I was thinking of putting it in a bucket with sphagnum peat moss with all of the excess moisture squeezed out. Keeping it cool and dry over winter. Any other ideas? Spray it with Physan 20 to be safe???

My suggestion would be to put it in a medium size pot, in a warm, well lit room, inside, to let it form roots right away. That plant comes from the tropics. It's never heard of dormancy. Maybe next year, you might try getting it to go dormant. But for right now, you should try to get it to form roots and grow, even if it's slowly.

the milky way is still outside here but it doesnt like the wet and cold autumn here.
it came from thailand this year so maybe ill try to let it grow through the winter inside:)

Yes Scot, I dun think you should let it go dormant. It does not know what that is and might never wake up.

Let it grow in a warm place instead.

The plant i ve sent is really growing very nicely and should throw out roots when it gets to you without any problem, or maybe it might even start in its box. It was shipped in moist perlite.

You should get it in about a week. I sent it out 3 days back.

Wow Scot. I just got your email! You see, the reason why I put it in plastic is beacause I wanted to retain as much moisture as possible. Humidity in Singapore is 90-100% so i was afraid once this baby left, she would dry out quickly and dry up! :)

I also sent u a good sized piece so it could better handle the shipping stress.
