Hong Kong Banana
Hi all,
I have heard that so called "Hong Kong Banana" is existing somewhere and it is said that this banana is very cold hardy contrary to the imagination of the word "Hong Kong". Has anyone ever heard of this? and know what? |
Re: Hong Kong Banana
That sounds like a very general name, and since hardly any details are presented, it makes it hard to even guess what it may be. Where did you hear about this banana, and do you have any photos or other details?

Re: Hong Kong Banana
Thanks Gabe15,
It is so written in a local banana web that there is so called "Hong Kong Banana" planted in the southern parts of Kyushuu Islands. Unfortunately, however, there are no data and no pictures shown in the blog. Until now I have never heard of "Hong Kong Banana" and the existence of this banana in Japan was not known. So I still am skeptical about this story. This was the reason why I asked you all if anybody heard of it or knew about this. |
Re: Hong Kong Banana
I have heard of M. balbisiana being called '"King Kong"....kinda similar, and also M. balbisiana has been known to grow in Japan. M. balbisiana is very variable and all of its diversity is not completely documented, but there are known varieties which are very hardy. I'm not saying that this "Hong Kong" banana is a M. balbisiana, but it is a possibility.

Re: Hong Kong Banana
I think it is the eBay seller, Seedmart that hung that name on them. (The King Kong label) They are also the ones selling seeds for edible Musa despite my several emails to them advising otherwise. It seems that they want to stick with their story, so I just won't buy from them anymore.
