Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' Flowering Question
Hi - I'm brand new to this board but have a question I can't find consistent answers for this elsewhere on the web....
My abyssinian banana has been growing in my backyard for 3 years now (I live in Orange County, CA) and I noticed it is flowering. I've read on a couple of website that it dies after flowering. Is this true - am I going to have to buy a new one and start all over again? Thanks, Carolyn:2737: |
Re: Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' Flowering Question
Yes, it will die. Musa (normal bananas) produce suckers (offshoots) to keep it going. Ensete however flower only once (in botany known as being monocarpic), they never produce suckers to take the place of flowering plant. In the wild they would normally produce seed but if you are just growing one you may not get seed and you will just have to buy another one.
