Hello Friends,
What is the name(s) among bananas to clear all of the following conditions simultaneously: 1. Edible bananas. 2. Cold hardiest. 3. Shortest in height. 4. Prolific in numbers of fingers. 5. Delicious in taste. Can anyone nominate from your own experience? Last edited by asacomm : 07-08-2013 at 10:00 PM. |

1. There are a lot of great varieties of bananas that are edible. Which varieties you might like to grow depends on your taste preferences, growing space, and availability. Some examples would be: Grand Nain, Dwarf Cavendish, Goldfinger, Saba etc. 2. There are several species that are extremely cold hardy: The Japanese Fiber Banana (Basjoo) and the Mekong Giant. They are capable of taking temperatures down to -20 F. Unfortunately, they don't produce edible fruit. There are several threads on bananas.org that talk about the most cold tolerant edible varieties. The cold hardy list Name the cold hardy bananas! 3. Some of the shortest banana varieties I can think of are: Truly Tiny (1-3 ft.), Little Prince (0.5-2 ft.), Super Dwarf Cavendish (2-4 ft.), Mauritius (4 ft.), and Dwarf Cavendish (5-7 ft.). 4. I've heard that FHIA-17 is a prolific producer when it's in a good environment, as is Gran Nain. Hopefully someone with lots of fruiting successes can add in! 5. Taste is really subjective, I guess it really depends on personal preference. There are several major classes of banana flavors, and which one is most appealing depends on the person. Gros Michel, Goldfinger, Mysore, Red, Nino, Namwah, and FHIA-18 are all highly recommended by bananas.org members for their excellent flavor. I hope this helps! Raja Puri is petite compared to DNW. Pretty sure it's not as hardy though.

From my experience, the numbers of banana that Cal Gold produces in a pot are very little and I think this banana seems to be very unprolific. The numbers of this banana for this year are only 9 fingers which, I think, are too little. |

Dwarf Namwah is one of the more prolific bananas that I have grown. Under commercial conditions I get well filled 30-40 lbs bunches. I think my heaviest was about 55 lbs. Gran Nain is short and will make large bunches as well, but has a tendency to choke. I never had much success with it. FHIA-1 makes a large bunch, seems to handle the cold pretty well, but is fairly tall.

My RP seems to suffer a little more from winter conditions than my other plants but also seems to bounce back from dormancy quicker.
