It's colder in the Chicago area. The night temperatures have been below freezing every day for the last week. I have the water to the outdoor faucet turned on and every day I have to wait for the water in the garden hose to thaw before I can use it. Also, there is about 1" of snow on the grass but on sidewalks, the snow is melted.

The latest heavy snow that I can remember was on April 5, 1982, about 9". I was driving home, when suddenly snow flakes the size of corn flakes started coming down. Traffic immediately came to a near standstill and it took me about 1.5 hours to drive 7 miles, which was normally a 20 minute trip. The snow melted in 2 days.

My stalks seem to be drying up more every day,, they need to go in the ground!!!!

SE Texas here, 46f is the lowest I see and my bananas are out and growing.

It's supposed to be 80 here in Denver today, but April (and early May) can be cruel! Crazy temp fluctuations this time of year. I don't consider planing bananas until May 15, and even then I double check the forecast.

Overall, we've been well to the west of the horrible winter weather. No temps below 0 all winter, little snow and things are blooming now. My lawn is green and back to regular mowing.

Our last frost date is May 15th, last year we had frost May 15th. Don't look like this warmth will last. Last year was nice in April and went downhill in May. Hopefully it will get better by May.

A couple of years ago, I put my bananas out on April 5. Missed that this year, and it don't look like it'll be any time soon.

I uncovered my Basjoo's. They are growing (8 inches of new growth) but had to protect them when we had another frost early this week. Supposed to go below freezing again on Monday, so I'll need to protect them again. Everything else needs to most likely wait another two or so weeks before it goes outside.

Spring....love it.

Basjoos are showing a slow push from deep in the mulch while pstems are white and tender and full of life. In a few weeks they will push from the mulch.

I have had spring ephemerals (Aconites) since mid February and now mayapples and ferns are starting to rise. The landscape has gone from brown to green.

The birds are rising early also, cardinals, robins and wrens ......natures alarm clock.

Spring....might snow in Southern Ohio tomorrow....but the early bloomers will be unfazed

Record lows here! Was 39f this morning! Looks good for the next 2 weeks thought! Maybe we are finally done with the cold!

41° F here last night ... 44° predicted for tonight, but night time mid 50s for the rest of the week.

I gave in and planted 12 of my basjoos yesterday that I had overwintered in my basement. Here in Kansas City, the lows should start staying in the 50s and above. This is my first year planting from dormancy (I have a few 5'-6' stems) so hopefully they all pull through. They all look great and green so far though.

Woohooo!.......Has been warming up in South Florida for the last couple of weeks!....Yesterday, (04/23/2018), we experienced the first drop of the season of 'Nana Nectar from Heaven (rain)!.....

It's been warming here in south Georgia , too. The soil temperature is now at 69° & 70°. I hope to see all my nanas start popping soon. ... Soil temps were in the low 50s a month ago.

@ Tomahawk; ... Night time air temperature lows is not all there is to it. The 6" soil temp for Missouri is still in the low 50s (48 & 49 in some places) as reported by the Missouri Ag weather as of this week. ... The corms still feel the cold. Those not cold tolerant will remain dormant and others will be slow growing. ... My Orinoco, Dwf Orinoco, 1000 Finger, Raja Puri all started pushing pups when the soil temps were in the mid 50°s.

Some of my Basjoo's really like this warmer weather. And I'm in Central Kentucky.

I've got 9 Basjoo healthy sword sucker pups that made it through winter. Taking them off the mother corms tomorrow!
