Spotters guide
 

I bought this at the local nursery back May. It only said on the pot Musa. I asked the people that worked there if it was a cold hardy Musa Basjoo. None of them knew. So, is there ways or spotting features to tell banana plants apart from each other? Anything that definitely says "this is a Basjoo, and that is a Gran Nain, etc"? Thanks in advance.

I’m no expert by any means, but that looks similar to dwarf Cavendish judging by the color of the pstem.

Not a Basjoo.......The one pictured is too short and too wide and plump.
Basjoo have a red tinge on the underside of the leaf and the telltale midrib as shown.

I agree not a basjoo for reasons stated- plus the petioles/pstem also appear to be lighter in color than a basjoo.

Thank you very much for the replies. I do have an actual basjoo and noticed the red line in the leaf that plant doesn't have. It also has red splotches on the leaves that leads me to believe its not a basjoo either. Ill just dig it up and store in the basement. Again, thank you all.

The young leaves of the Dwarf Cavendish will have red/maroon color on them but as the leaves age, they lose this color.

Ill take another picture of this guy later today. I believe its a basjoo, however I dont see the red line in the stem. Seemed like it had it before. I got this for fathers day from that nursery that doesnt know much. Is there anything that I can use to identify. Again thank you/

Are these Basjoo's? I know the leaves are beat up and the weather has cooled off here. We havent had a frost yet. I see some red in the trunk and in the leaves but hard to tell by the shape they are in. I need to make a decision on whether to cut these down and mulch them or dig them up?

OFF topic, I have a grand naine banana in a pot. Should I put that to rest for the winter or try to keep growing it inside during the winter?

I'd say they are not Basjoos as my Basjoos do not have any red in the stem. However, the vein in the leaves does have red in it. [IMG][/IMG]

Thank you very much. This has been a stuggle but a good lesson has been learned. Ill get these two dug up this weekend. Ill also take note to not buy anything from that nursery anymore, HA
