Northernmost Musa velutina

Got a question... I was just talking to a friend of mine that owns a "garden center", about M.velutina. He asked me what the hardiness is for this type of banana. I told him, there are people that grow them in 7a and even 6b, if mulched. What is the limit to these banans? How far north do people successfully grow them? (zonewise)...

Once the wiki is opened up, you'll be able to see pins wherever people are growing it :)

We will see how a few do here overwinter outside! Now many try 2 different ways to protect them.

People may be growing it in northern zones, but it doesn't mean they are growing and overwintering it in the ground. Looking at a map doesn't do justice.

I think Randy wants to hear about people growing velutina in colder zones from first hand experience.

The Musa Velutina are from seeds we received from Randy so they will be tested outside this coming winter!
Right now we have 2 ways plan on do that and might have few more ways by Fall.

As far as the northern most location outdoors that's a good question. The west coast(and UK) are alot more mild winter climate, and usually poorer summer growing climate. I'd guess that the northern most would be somewhere in the west, but I have found veluntina to be a weak grower on the west coast, compared to Musa ornata(standard from seed), and about as cold hardy.
Good question.:ropingnaner:
