Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Fellow Carolina member checking in! Well if we had a house I would have a yard full like you guys thats for sure. Gave some to my parents, some never made it being dry stored, traded some locally. My goal is to get every cold hardy that will grow in NC. I understand if its not a normal winter I might loose some. But its a goal :birthdaynana:.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Ok this is getting bad I go to my wife's aunt"s house today to work on her computer, when we start to leave I go next door to look over the neighbors fuyu persimmon. then I spot these little banana like things growing in the rubbish pile. well I gotta look then I pull them out and they are canna bulbs so I say why not looks like a little naner, so now I have five canna planted in the naner patch. just goes to show when you are addicted it can just look nanner and you gotta plant it. I found there is a canna called mellow yellow. Gotta do something about this habit haven't got but 27 acres its gona fill up fast.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Hello everyone,
my name is Jamie. I'm from Fair Grove Mo and I'm a banana growing addict. I've been an addict for a while now and it's hard to stop. My wife is the first one home everyday , so when plants show up in the mail she is the first to see them. It always brings on the same question. Where are these going to go! Lol answer..... I'll find a place! Lol She is very supportive but I don't think she quite understands it. |

The first step is admitting you have a problem.... for me it's also the last step.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
:woohoonaner: wow! All this time I thought I was all alone in my affliction, but since I found this site I realize there are others out there just like me! Lol I'll never forget when my first banana showed up on my doorstep. Then shortly after there were hundreds of more varieties!! I had to have them all!!!(my poor wife) packages started showing up at the door and she was thinking (what in the world is he doing) but I soon realized it just was not going to be when the little bananas grew into huge plants. But now I am learning you can store them dormant ,so we will see.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Yes there is a bunch of us here. I had a very bad problem when I would go in to a store and I saw banana plants I would have to buy them and take them home. I would justify it every time. Now I can just look at them and hope someone gives them a good home. Im not cured at all. But its getting better.

I do the exact same thing! My wife usually drives because she hates my driving so it gives lots of good banana looking!

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
If I'm in a nursery with Mom, and I spy a nana I don't have, she spots it in the cart and wants to know why more bananas? But once they're in the ground she loves 'em.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Dont even get me started on what my girlfriend says about my bananas....lol
Im going to Topsail Beach, NC tonight and will be there for a few days. Is there any good places around there to find some bananas?? |
Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Nothing around Topsail as I lived 30mins from there for a year. Now live in Wilmington which is a hr away from there. Most places aren't ordering nanners anymore. Best place to find some is a place called Pender Pines Nursery. From Topsail just take 17 south to Hampstead county. It will be on the right side of the road. Should be like 30mins away. Gary is the owner and a nice guy. We had a bad winter here so all his nanners growing around the place are still small. He claims this large mat of nanners is cavendish but I'm 99% sure he is wrong as they get no prtection and always come back.
He sells nanner wise Cavendish Siam Ruby Corodo Velutina Bordolen Basjoo Reds Yellow Thats all I have seen past few years. Here is the address 20949 U.S. 17 Hampstead, NC 28443-3149 (910) 270-2706 |
Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Great place to eat is the new york cafe I think thats the name. Cheap and good! Also if you pay enough attention you will see two small houses that have orinoco nanners growing right down the street from Wings. One has grass and a very nice yard landscaped. Also has Velutina growing. I would not keep any of the nanners I listed at Gary's in the ground unless you had pups to bring in. Basjoo of course would be fine.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
If you want to take a drive south to Charleston SC, you can find Carolina Nurseries they sell about 15 different varieties.

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group
Well, I have about a dozen bananas here in San Jose, CA, but I have about 130 fruit-bearing plants on our 7,200-foot lot, and that's with the house, the driveway, the sidewalk, everything. It's an expensive addiction, because you have to have a house, and out here, they are REALLY expensive and don't come with much land. Coke would be cheaper.
What I really love is when I give CRFG garden tours, and people walk away scratching their heads saying, "I guess I have more space than I thought I had..." |
