Musa itinerans var. itinerans
I heared this specie is also quiet cold hardy. Are there people that have any experiences with this Musa. Is is comparable with Musa basjoo?
And is there a notable difference between itinerans and itinerans var. itinerans? Thanks |

Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
Thank you Bob ! very kind to point me out to this link. I will read it carefully.
Any ideas where someone can get his hands on some seeds of this specie? |
Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
You could try posting a want ad here of course. I would also look at ebay over the course of time. I was able to get 3 varieties of sikkimensis there from Ireland and am currently growing a var. "Darjeeling Giant" in a pot that wil go in the ground next year. You never know what will turn up with patience.

Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
I'm also wondering if the itinerans ( india form ) that is suggested on the website of Sunshineseeds is even cold hardy as the itinerans var. itinerans form.
Maybe bigdog can tell us something about this, because i noted that he had already sprouted some of this kind too. Thanks again Bob |
Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
This banana seems really promising, It might even be a nicer more tolerant banana than musa basjoo. I hope to start seeing them more in the future, but right now it looks almost impossible to get any of them. If anyone nows a reliable source for them I would probably be interested.

Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
Dear 51state, do you have any experiences with the cold hardy factor of this specie?
Where you able to grow it with or without protection in the UK - climat? Thanks for sharing the info ! :goteam: |
Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
Larger plants will grow outside with protection, but not without. The western European climate is very different to the U.S., our latitude is much higher and our winters longer and wetter. The main problem overwintering bananas (certainl in the U.K.) is the months of cool, damp conditions which can cause rot.

Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
How tall is it?
:woohoonaner: |
Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
I will measure it to get an exact height, but an approximate is 1 meter. It looks a lot taller if you take the photo looking straight up the pseudostem. :2239:

Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
@ Caloosamusa: You did grow it from seeds? what was your seed source. If people are talking about a hardy itinerans, it's always the initerans var. initerans. But till now I can't find any seed source

Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
Good afternoon Palmpje,
One of the moderators on the forum started it from seed, then sold some to another person on the forum.( Check the entire threads on M. i. itinerans and photo albums). Then I was sold this one itinerans. I've had it less than a year. I had to wait and watch for a while before I obtained one, be patient. Good growing and good weather to you. When it flowers I plan to cross pollinate it with a diploid Musa acuminata. Keep an eye open to the forums. :2239: |

I got my var. itinerans from a friend who sprouted it from seed from TianZi Biodiversity Research & Development Centre, China, Thailand. They no longer sell seeds, so it will be a little while before it gets into cultivation. Somebody will tc it eventually. Frank |
Re: Musa itinerans var. itinerans
Thanks Bigdog and caloosamusa to give more info about the source of this very interesting specie. Based on the information that I have read on the bord, this looks like a very interesting Musa. Maybe potentially better then Musa basjoo for our humid climats. I would love to test that out in the future.

Dear go.sail.
I don't want to go off topic but I will do anyway to clear my name. I apologize for using your picture. But you have to know that I found this picture trough a google image search. I was unaware of it's origin. Also I was unaware that this picture was yours. When the moderator asked me to remove that picture, i complied offcourse without any problem. Greetings |
