I've got nanners!
 

Okay, so technically they're plantains, but I have fingers! :woohoonaner:

I hadn't even noticed them, but my mailman pointed them out to me this afternoon. I never expected this from a second season plant, but I am happy!

So what will this flower do? Will it open and look pretty, or is this the extent? How much longer before these plantains are ripe? Is Musa basjoo even edible?

Unfortunately Basjoo banana variety is consider inedible!....Seedy and more as a ornamental banana!.....Looks very beautiful!...:bananarow:

OH, darn ... you talking about those plants! How far along are the fingers to maturity?

I don't think you have time for the nanners to ripen on the tree before freezing. They will continue to grow & ripen if the stalk is cut and place in a bucket of water to feed the nanners in the house or greenhouse.

Congrats. Looks awesome. Basjoo is not edible because of the seeds. I told myself with velutina I was gonna eat around the seeds. Impossible! Inside a single tiny 2" banana there was 101 seeds. If I could separate the pulp from the seeds I would get a teaspoon worth from the whole bunch. I'm not sure how basjoo is but that's my experience with seeded bananas.

Thanks everyone. They're all boys, BTW.

I have no idea how far along they are. I'm a month ahead of the bunch I saw on one of my routes last year, so if temps hold out, they may still mature.

Here's my thing: these are plantains, not bananas, which is good, because I hate bananas. These are full of seeds. Banana chips are actually fried and dehydrated plantains, right? Can I do that with these?

BTW, Edwmax, thanks for that suggestion. I will try that if I can chip these suckers.

Now about the flower... will it get more showy?

wont the seeds chip youre teeth even if they are fried?

get a mesh bag with a mesh such that it holds back the seeds but allows the mush through

then fry that up?

From what I gather it's the seeds that are inedible, they are so hard you chip a tooth. If you look up online there are a tons of seeds. If you can manage to separate the seeds I would be curious to know what they taste like? The banana not the seeds of course.

Wow, seriously, the seeds are that hard?

I wish I'd known this last month. I could have dropped some seeds in my opponents' hors d'oeuvres and kept them from debating me on PBS.

Oh, it just hit me, you don't know what that office is, sorry.

That depends on how much effort you want to put into eating a banana. Will it tast like a banana? Yes. Will it look like a banana? Yes. If you want to pick out a handful of seeds to eat a spoonful of fruit, then good for you. I will try it when my Basjoo fruits. I think everyone should try it once. Just spit them out like watermelon seeds. And of course, tast report.

What's the big thing in the middle of the flower? It weighs a couple of pounds.

BTW, it's got honey bees and carpenter bees all over the flower. Local banana honey! LOL.

I presume your are referring to the 'cabbage' looking yellowish-green head from you picture. The banana hands form between each leaf petal (bracts). Since no more hands are forming on the stalk the new banana fingers are 'male' flowers and falling off. The big bud is eatable and can be cut off the stalk at this point. The bracts can be cut up into salads and/or used as table decorations. I've also heard they can be fried, but I've haven't seen a recipe for that.
